Mario Kart Wii: Global Video Game of the Year

Monday, February 2nd, 2009 at 8:00am by Jack

Combine the all software sales in Japan, the U.S. and the U.K., and Mario Kart Wii comes out on top with 8.94 million sold, beating Wii Fit in second and the much ballyhooed Grand Theft Auto IV in third with a completely respectable 7.29 million.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl takes fourth with 6.32 million, and the number of core gamers on the Wii rises ever higher.

Any reason why Mario Kart Wii shouldn’t be given 2008 game of the year honors?

Despite the fact that I do play it and have fun it was rushed to market. The items are not balanced properly and there is not the level of customization available in Smash Bros. Those factors would hold it back from being game of the year.

“it sold the most therefore it’s the best” is not the proper basis for choosing the game of the year.

it is no more appealing than just looking at metacritic scores.

One obvious reason, the game lacks ambition.

    Whatever the hell that means.

It doesn’t have a gun in it.

Because it’s just an online wiimake of double dash, without the fun co-op mode.
Brawl is such a better advancement for a series and I’ve got a lot more out of that than I have or ever will from Mario Kart Wii

Jamie is right. MKWii was a good game, but it was barely a step over Double Dash. It is probably the best in the series, but only by improving over it’s predecessors, not trying to exceed them.

No FPS = No GOTY = I remember better days.

Damn! You boys are too critical!

Mario Kart on Wii is fun as hell!

    1) Online is one of the best on Wii.
    2) I THOROUGHLY enjoyed working my way through all 32 staff ghosts.
    3) WAS NOT rushed to market. Why compare it to brawl hunter? It’s Mario Kart…And it’s a great step past the others.
    4) AS EASY AS I CAN PUT IT: The losers who didn’t give it a chance are the ones who don’t like it. Darn shame.
    5) It’s a LOT more “Hardcore” than the haters think. Try watching a “hardcore” player verse a “casual” player online and then tell me how “casual” the game looks looks. Hahahahahahahaha

But still Brawl deserves GOTY…What a great game. I just had to defend Mario Kart first. You haters are malicious!

Because Nintendo made Mario Kart communist. Nintendo wanted to make the game “playable” for both non-gamers and hardcore gamers. As a result, they based the rules of the game on communism.

Bad players (aka noobs) are constantly be rewarded with good weapons while good players are constantly “punished” with bad weapons. Why? To make everybody “equal” in the game.

In Battle, good players are being punished until the scores of the competing team are equalized (which is the whole point of communism).

Once you managed to race ahead of everybody else, or once you managed to collect enough coins, whatever type of game you play in Mario Kart Wii, the players in the back or who have the worst scores will eventually get a blue shell which is specifically designed to hit the player at #1 or the player with the best scores.

If that isn’t enough, the game constantly tricks the best players/players with the best scores into falling off the road/stage by the POW weapon, “accidental” hits by green shells, etc. I can go on and on.

In fact, in Battle, it’s no longer possible in Mario Kart to play individually. Communism is opposed to individualism and supports collectivism instead. Thus, in Battle, you can now only play in teams. If you are good, your team will play bad. If you are bad, your team will play good. No matter how “hardcore” you are, even against the biggest noobs you will have a hard time defeating them because you are not really playing AGAINST THEM, but AGAINST THE COMPUTER.

Mario Kart enforced equality by rewarding bad players and punishes good players.

Mario Kart Wii is a disgrace to gaming and all those who fought and still fight communism. Communists have exterminated more people (to “equalize” everybody, must like Mario Kart Wii does now with skills) than fascists or anybody else. Communism is a sick political ideology.

I have been a fan of Nintendo for over a decade but since Mario Kart cart, I have become the opposite of a fan. Nintendo deserves to even get bankrupt for what they have done with Mario Kart. Mario Kart used to be an excellent video game. Now it’s only good to brainwash kids into getting comfortable and accepting communism.

I would never allow my kids to play Mario Kart Wii or any other communist video game (but Mario Kart Wii is definitely the Communist Game of the Year).

I think Mario Kart Wii is an amazing game on the Wii, probably the strongest offering on the console to date.

But Global Game of the Year? Not quite. I would suggest Fallout 3 for that title.

@Stalfos: I never play the battle mode, so maybe you’re right on that one. But on races, someone without skill couldn’t never beat someone with good kills, that’s a fact that can be proven everytime on online races (well, except in that stupid Luigi Circuit track).

I think MKWii is my game of the year (at least based on time I have spent playing). My only complains are the cheaters online, they are out of control, and that stupid cloud item, sometimes it comes when you don’t have anyone near you.

    Donkey Kong’s voice.

Try to finish a race playing as Donkey Kong without forcing earplugs permanently into your cranium. Ahooo hoo ho hooooOO!!!!

  14. John says...

    Stalfos…..

You’re in idiot. The whole communist thing…

Yeah, that’s the way every Mario Kart game to date works. Nintendo isn’t about to change the formula for some cry baby like you. If you don’t like it, GET OUT.

Besides, I’ve taken MULTIPLE blue shells in an online race (Three, actually) and still taken first. You must just be terrible.

  15. frstOne says...

Well, actually, I did some research and the worst-player-gets-better-items thing started from the gba game (that is, the snes and the n64 games didn’t work like that). Now I wonder if this makes MKWii better or worse…

Btw, I just remembered my biggest complain about the game: Bikes are like ten times better than karts, specially online. That’s bad because I find funnier to play with karts :( .
