Japanese Hardware Sales (May 2007)

Japanese Hardware Sales May 2007

Bloomberg reports that Nintendo is outselling Sony in Japan. They say Wii is outselling PS3 by 5 to 1. Having a hard time visualizing numbers, and being inspired by Blake’s chart obsession, I created the above pie graph to illustrate just what those numbers mean. [The totals are for video game hardware only, so Sony's plethora of other products do not figure into the equation.]

Infendo Nation, I ask you, how does Sony get back on top? Can they?

Why does Japan love the Wii. hahaha PS3 will never make it to the top with its lack of games, and it doesn’t do what it was promised to.

That graph, to me, represents an insurmountable lead in Japan. PS3 may “catch on” with the release of Final Fantasy and other must have titles, but the numbers won’t budge much. Those who want what the PS3 offer have, by and large, already purchased the system.

Why won’t things budge much more than this? Because if this keeps up, people’s perceptions of gaming will change from what the Playstation brand created over the past 10 years into something completely new. There will no doubt be a place for the PS3 in gaming, but you’re seeing what its market share will roughly represent above. Nintendo has, so far, successfully disrupted the market. The results are above.

Yeah, I guess my choice for red in that pie graph could represent blood in the Blue Ocean. (Really, I picked red because it’s Nintendo and Infendo’s favorite color.)

To Jack: I don’t think people’s perceptions of gaming changed much… They still prefer a simple, affordable, and reliable system over a bells-and-whistles system! The PS2 was the lesser-capable system of the previous generations, and it was the one that people bought the most. They still are buying that one! I wonder why Sony suddenly turned its back on its own strategy…

    …Hah, poor Microsoft….

    Hahaha, Nintendo owns. End of.

Fanboys rejoice! The time has come for us to regain what is rightfully ours!!!

I see this graph a little differently. First, I don’t consider the Wii and PS3 to be in competition with each other. I consider the PS3 and the 360 to be competitors, and I’m very sad to see the (arguably) superior 360, which has a stellar lineup of games out already, getting it’s ass kicked by the late, lame PS3. The Wii is also suffering from a desperate lack of quality games, but the price point and fun factor makes it a hugh success in the category of “toy”. I love the Wii and the DS – but when I compare the 360 experience to the Wii, it feels like comparing a Ferrarri to a Go-Kart. Two totally different experiences, and each fun in their own right. But one experience is accessible to the masses, and one isn’t.

Nintendo has a near-monopoly on the category of toys>videogames and sony and microsoft are duking it out in the category of prosumer entertainment>videogames and for that Sony is winning in Japan not losing.

  10. Wii-Wii says...

Sony can only get back on top of hardware units sold if they drop the price by a LOT.
Of course, if this graph represented the actual PROFIT from each system sold, the entire graph, 100% would be Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft both take a LOSS when they sell consoles. So if Sony drops the price of the PS3 and ” Sell” more units, they just fall deeper in LOSS. hahahahah

So Nintendo wins again, it seems.

  11. Clonester says...

They wont be able to compete at this point with the Wii. Some say a major price slash, but with a low manufacturing cost Nintendo holds the upper hand in a price war. However they can carve out a nice system with some good exclusives like the Gamecube had. But at this point the Wii is on track to PS2-like dominance.

  12. HylianTom says...

According to the latest MediaCreate sales numbers:
the Wii has sold 2,535,216 units in Japan
the PS3 has sold 901,740 units in Japan

To put this in perspective: if the PS3 were to outsell the Wii by 25,000 units each week, it would take 65.33904 weeks for it to catch-up to the Wii’s userbase.

The Wii typically outsells the PS3 by 40,000-to-50,000 units each week, and there’s no sign of this trend stopping, or even slowing. It would take a dramatic turnaround of unprecedented proportions for the PS3 to have any hope of catching-up.

The graph really puts it into perspective. Microsoft sucks. Japanese have brand loyalty, Sony & Nintendo only. No foreign ‘power?’ will take over. I would hate to be in charge of Microsoft marketing here in Japan. Microsoft is just that, micro=very small + soft=software. Kinda hits the nail on the head, doesn’t it?

“how does Sony get back on top? Can they?”

Do you want them to? I think they helped a ton staling the game industry. And now they are reaping th benefits of creating the hardcore gamer.

its official… reggie bathes in money

  18. Jim says...

    I see a fine green line ;-)

  19. AC says...

no sony won’t be able to catch up this gen. the wii is the hit this generation as ps2 was last gen. and Rob (Fool Throttle), you are wrong. nintendo may not compete directly with sony and MS, but they are competing in some of the same space. the wii is not only a toy. toy implies something only kids play with. it has more in common with the ipod than a transformer. its the next evolution in interactive entertainment. so in actuality, the wii is less of about video games and more about interactive entertainment. hence the popularity of it.

  20. AC says...

i think Rob (Fool Throttle), that you are one of those people that fail to understand why the wii is so successful, and really have a hard time making sense of it.

  21. Bernie says...

I have never seen anything that would look so disgusting. Why do people publish stuff like that? I don’t understand them!
