It’s official: Guitar Hero 5, Tony Hawk Ride announced for Wii

Activision, the world’s largest software-only video game publisher, revealed two peripheral-based games for Wii, Xbox 360, PS2, and PS3 today. Guitar Hero 5 will go head-to-head with Rock Band Beatles this fall. Tony Hawk Ride is being billed as a “reinvention” of the 10 year franchise that uses a new skateboard controller. Although both games were previously implied to be coming to Wii, it wasn’t made official until today.
The biggest addition to Guitar Hero 5 appears to be a drop in/drop out party mode, in which players can join the game mid song. The biggest addition to Tony Hawk is the radical shift from thumb-based controls, to foot controls, similar to other balance board games already released on Wii like Shaun White Snowboarding and Skate It. Both Guitar Hero 5 and Tony Hawk Ride are scheduled for release this fall.

No, the biggest addition to GH5 in my opinion is the ability to have any combination of instruments, be it 4 drums or 3 lead guitars. That kind of customization is more than welcome in my party group. There are so many people that prefer to always and/or only play lead guitar, and are depressed when one has to default to bass.

I guess we’re waiting til next gen when they can finally add true guitar strap support in-game. Looks like the guitars are still just floating in space… maybe they need some blast processing.

I can’t see how RIDE is going to be big. If I want to get the ‘true skateboarding experience’, I would buy a skateboard. How will you ollie in the game? Kickflip, etc… I just can’t see it being a more ‘intuitive’ experience than the balance board.

Oooh. Big surprise. Did this really deserve an up front 2-page article? We all KNEW this was gonna happen. It’s not like TvC or anything.

They better get some good rock and metal artists for Guitar Hero. If I wanted to play pop/folk music, I’d buy Rock Band.
