I think the main reason why there isn’t a bigger hoopla about a Smash Bros Melee midnight launch as opposed to, say, a Halo 2 or 3 midnight launch lies in the online play factor more than the game itself.
With Xbox LIVE, you know you can go right back home after getting the game and hook up immediately with your friends to try out the game online all night long…
With Nintendo’s Wi-Fi, you first have to boot up the game and find your Friend Code, then find a way to post it outside of the game, and finally, pray that all your buddies copied your code in their game and then synchronize the whole thing. It’s NOT gonna happen, people! Or at least, it requires far more effort and coordination than what you would normally put into a video game, even the best video game.
With Nintendo Wi-Fi, it usually takes about a week to get all the friend codes and tournament times coordinated… and I think Nintendo took that into account when they developed their free online service! (Many times less traffic than in LIVE, you see…)
