Infendo Radio #72: Is Nintendo expanding the market?
Sunday, September 2nd, 2007 at 6:49pm by Blake
Hey everyone! Listen in this week as Scott and I discuss Metroid Prime 3 goodness, a special discussion examining if Nintendo is really expanding the market, New Game Get!, this week in gaming history, 2 cents in 60 seconds, and listener calls.
Get that.

Metroid Prime 3’s artistic design in the later three planets is just stunning, absolutely stunning. You have to appreciate the attention to detail to every aspect of the game. When you traverse down a morph ball tunnel, there are little intricate details and designs that you just zoom pass. Arguably, Retro did not have to put them there, but they did. Samus’ eye reflection on her visor was great enough, but they actually made her eyes follow the pointer whenever you scan something. There are many things like these that make this game extremely polished. These are the tiny things I really appreciate. If Retro doesn’t make another game in the same vein as their Metroid games, it’ll be a crying shame.

Nice intro, Guys!

Stunning game will have to finish Zelda when I finish Metroid.

I’ve been playing through MP3 on ‘veteran’ and I’m about 1/2 way done, the hardest part so far was the boss fight to get the ice beam - it took me 4 tries…

Rundas was definitely a tough fight. I don’t think that fight could’ve been done with dual analog controls at all (as with most of the bosses in Prime 3). He moves way too fast and some of his attacks required you to be pinpoint accurate to be able to take them out. This is where the Wii controls shine. Even without lock-on, you’re able to hit him pretty accurately. Veteran mode seems to be a perfect challenge for Metroid enthusiast while Normal mode is best for newcomers.

Blake and Scott,
You’re honestly playing with the default controls? You HAVE to try out the advanced control scheme. In my opinion they didn’t make it fast enough! You guys crack me up.
I haven’t heard anyone prefer the default scheme besides you two.

And yes, nintendo is expanding the market. My mother got a ds lite yesterday.

I am currently playing through the game on veteran on my second run, felt Normal was a bit easy. And speaking of Rundas…hard? You got to be kidding; he was one of the easier bosses, but then again can’t really say that any of the bosses were hard at all. If anything, it’s the Space Pirates later on that get to be a pain in the butt.
So hopefully with Veteran difficulty; might get a true challenge.

I thought the bosses were hard until I got over my inhibitions about button-mashing. Just get him in your sights and start firing away at mach speed… the bosses definitely go down quicker that way. And there’s something very satisfying about it too, just unloading a sh**load of ammo like that…

Nintendo said they wanted to bring new people and they did. The Gamecube was never “sold-out” for even a week… They already crossed the xbox360 a few days ago and mostly everyone I know that plays games has an xbox360, yet most still have to be able to find a Wii in stores for themselves, so who is buying it?

I have a prediction: The next Metroid title will be something related to the “Bounty Hunters” element of Metroid and be a 1st person online versus shooter like a Halo, but good.

LOL… default controls are for noobs. If you use the advance controls it is like keyboard and mouse, or at least damn near.

I agree we need more Earthworm Jim. Those games were (and still are) absolutely AWESOME!

Are you serious guys!? Rundas was EASY! (At least the first time around, because then it was pretty though lol). I beat him on one try, but then i remembered i didnt scanned so i had to quit and restart from a previous save point. I went again, scanned him, but he killed me, tried again… died. It wasnt till the third time that i both scanned and defeated him.
As for Nintendo expanding the market?
Who cares? There are some awesome games (a good balance between hardcore and casual) coming out from now on. The future looks bright, no matter if you look at it from a hardcore or casual perspective.

Please guys, give the advance control settings a shot, it is boss.
I think we should wait for the Prime multiplayer game too! Metroid Arena?

For the record, I’ve played on advance on two occasions for an extended amount of time. “Normal” just feels more solid to me.

FYI hotel wi fi sucks

Another vote for Advanced control scheme. You guys are crazy for sticking with Standard. Too slow. Metroid Prime 3 is the beginning of truly great Wii games. SO GOOD.

Ridley. I believe the big bird boss’ name is Ridley. Or Mega Ridley, in this level.

And I agree with Scott about MP3 screaming for multiplayer: before I played it, I thought “meh… I can live without it”. But the immersion of the controls make you want to play against live players for sure! I think the real reason for not including it, though is because their online service is not developed enough. Maybe next year!
And yes, Blake, I feel like I’m getting worse at these games as I grow older. Reflexes starting to fade? No, I think the new controls make you “start from scratch” as far as gaming abilities go. But I believe these controls will be easier to get used to than the dual-analog-stick type.

Actually the giant bird/dragon/space pirate is Meta Ridley.
I suppose to each his own on control matters, I definetly prefer advance but I suppose that is why they included the different option, different strokes for different folks?

On bringing back Earthworm Jim: EJ came out for the GBA at launch, and the only reason it bombed was that everyone complained about how dark the screen was. But this was before the GBA SP, and way before the DS and GBA micro. EJ part 2 came out a year or two later, but the damage to its reputation had been done. The catridges was pretty faithful to the originals, though, so pick them up if you can find them and play them on your DS!

more for the record, I had not tried it yet by the time we aired the show.
