    Wow, so a confession first, I take notes during the podcasts so that I can remember everything I want to comment on, and I have a lot this week, for both Scott, and Blake, as well as the podcast in General;

    About the gamelink cable, I even felt nerdy asking my own cousin to play Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles with me! But later in life I found a guy who loved gaming, and we played Four Swords until Gannon…when all of a sudden his SP battery died…I finished the game later without him, but nonetheless our deciding to play the game together went a lot like Blake’s story of the Jersey guy.

    Concerning the GB games on the Virtual Console. I would personally support an expansion pack that could download games to the GBA that sits in the GBA slot…maybe call it the Virtual Handheld?

    @Blake I think a lot of Nintendo haters may have buyers remorse for their console of choice, and therefore decide that everything Nintendo makes is crap. How would you feel about an Okami coming to Wii, both graphically and control-wise as our next big visual stunner? Lastly, LittleBigPlanet is a game to watch for a PS3 owner, check it out if you havent already. (and keep on trucking on Super Metroid…I promise it only gets better from there.)

    @Scott The magic you feel about Nintendo polish to the games that it makes, and that feeling. I have heard that one of the translations of the name “Nintendo” means, “take care of all the details and heaven will take care of the rest.” Assuming this translation is solid, even the company name resides in amazing attention to detail, and some sort of divine help…so yeah Nintendo magic. Secondly I think that people who were there for the beginning of the video games industry (myself almost excluded…I was born in ‘86, but have two older brothers who were playing games much earlier) feel the same way the older generation does about the movie industry, I had an older professor who spoke the same way about movies as people who have been gaming for a long time do about games. I think our ages movie industry is gaming.

    Okay, hope you enjoyed what I thought and look forward to your responses Great show guys!

    Wow, I can’t believe you guys run a Nintendo site and have never played Super Metroid. It’s on numerous top 10 lists of greatest games of all time and considered the pinnacle 2D sidescrolling shooters and game design for a reason. Yes Scott, do yourself a favor as a Nintendo fan and a gamer and play Super Metroid.

    Great show, keep up the great work.

    Blake, I think you had trouble finding people to play Gamecube because it really was considered the kids’ console. It was truly one of the biggest reasons I didn’t buy one at the time and eventually sold my N64 while in college. There was just something about the games that came out for the N64 after Ocarina of Time that made me loose interest. It was about the time of the Pokemon popularity explosion and the time when the PS1 and then the PS2 gained in popularity.

    Thinking I was “too old” for Nintendo by then I had no desire to get a GameCube and the cell shaded look of Winder Waker really solidified my decision at the time. I think what you ran into is that people like us, who grew up playing Nintendo for years, are all about the same age and at that time “we” all thought we were too old to play Nintendo anymore, it was time to move on to the more “adult” systems. It didn’t help either that I met a girl who eventually became my wife and I gave up on all gaming in general.

    Although the Wii is a hit in it’s own right, one thing that I personally see as an advantage for Nintendo is timing. The Wii came just as I was getting over my idea that Nintendo was for kids and I imagine there is a sizable subset of Nintendo’s customers who are just like me.

    Before I was even really aware of what the Wii was going to be, I had picked up a GameCube off of eBay in early 2006 after playing a bit of Mario Kart Double Dash with my brother-in-law. I was reminded of just how much fun Nintendo games were. After a nearly five year hiatus, I’ve now played through Wind Waker, Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime and I’m still working on Prime 2.

    Anyway, the Wii arrived at a time where a number of people who grew up on Nintendo and may have later abandoned Nintendo are now old enough to have changed their mind. When E3 2006 came I was starting to pay attention. Seeing what the Wii would be I got really excited. I loved the idea and I knew I could get my parents and in-laws to play as well. I managed to pick up a Wii in late December and I’ve been enjoying it since. With a young child in the house, I don’t get a lot of time to play so most games last a long time.

    I bought the GameCube in 2002, my Freshman year of college. The first two years of college I mostly played games by myself (Wind Waker, Prime, Sunshine, misc EA Sports titles, and Smash Bros).Everyone else in the dorms seemed to be playing Halo.
    However, in my Junior year, I was with a new group of roommates, and we all got extremely hooked on Double Dash. We literally spent almost every night the first semester playing that game. We had our own leaderboard and a Mario Kart championship belt. We eventually got several others in the dorm playing with us too. It has been the greatest multiplayer experience I have had to date with video games.

    Super Metroid laid the ground work for the graphical style of the GBA Metroid games.

    Scott is right: Picross is a blast!! Go get it…

    On Jack’s editorial piece, and my history with gaming systems: I’ve truly enjoyed enormously all systems I’ve purchased, including recently the PS2, but Nintendo systems have some kind of continuity to them that makes you come back again and again.

    Having said that, there is no “winner” in my mind, just great games in each system, all with very different styles. And that’s a good thing!

    You make me very mad Scott Johnson. You in very big trouble!
