I’m seriously doubting the new Tony Hawk controller

GameTrailers unveiled the new Tony Hawk peripheral controller, which is a life-size plastic skateboard with no wheels. I like the Balance Board for Shaun White Snowboarding. Didn’t like it so much on Skate It. So my reaction to the above image was a bit subdued. What do you think?

The control buttons on the side for “grabbing” are intriguing… This might actually work!

Activision is desperate.

One thing that could make or brake this device: it needs to be compatible with other future skate games! The Tony Hawk franchise is not that popular anymore, and this can’t sell on that property alone…

At least it is not white…

I think it will surpass the Balance Board as far as the skating experience goes because this board has real curves, and you can flip it, turn it, do manuals, etc. It’s much more interactive. Also, the buttons are not for grabbing, they are for navigation of menus. You grab by reaching your hand to the board, not necesarily grabbing it, and the sensors detect it as a grab. I think it will be fun, and they will release extension games for it, like snowboard and surf for it in the future.

I’m kind of curious what it’s going to take to pull moves. Are we going to be expected to do real ollies to get air? I’m assuming not mainly because it’d probably cause a lot of lawsuits from people breaking furniture and bones trying to pull off moves.
If it’s going to be more of a leaning thing then I’m really hoping I don’t have to pay for this device and I can just use my balance board.

With very few exceptions…traditional controls > Wii-like gimmicks.

Yeah, can’t see this working.
See also: the last tony hawk game on the ds which included tilt controls (awful, just awful.)

Okay, it looks neat. But why bother taking such a huge risk when the balance board, which has untapped potential (because let’s face it, if we had judged the Wii Remote on Red Steel alone, we would have never had the opportunity to appreciate great games like Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 that use the Wii Remote to great effect), is waiting to have more games developed for it. A lot of people already own the balance board and probably aren’t going to want another expensive piece of plastic cluttering up their space and leeching their wallets, anyway.
*sigh*

You guys seem to forget that the 360 and PS3 don’t have a balance board.
Anyway, at first glance I didn’t like the idea, but then I remembered that arcade game with a skateboard. And that game was fun. So, maybe it’ll work. I’m not interested in the least, but it may be a great idea in the end.

I have Shawn White Snowboarding and I like it. However, it makes the thighs BURN! I used to love spending hours playing the older tony hawk games. I can’t see spending hours with this thing. If I did, I’d come out with Chun Li thighs.
