Happy trails: Ten best Wii games remaining

06. Rhythm Heaven (Nintendo)

Rhythm games are dead. Nintendo must not have gotten the memo.

A sequel to the company’s 2009 Nintendo DS game, Rhythm Heaven is bringing its eclectic brand of musical mayhem to a home console for the first time on Wii.

Titled simply Rhythm Heaven, the Wii version is an all-new collection of rhythmic minigames. Before you cringe at the term, understand they’re not what you might be expecting. Rhythm Heaven has more in common with a game like WarioWare than a stereotypical minigame compilation, in terms of both gameplay and design.

Rhythm Heaven’s minigames incorporate rhythmic objectives into classic minigame premises. You’re slicing objects with a katana, playing ping-pong’things you’ve done dozens of times before in minigames.

But never quite like this.

The game seems to be coming along well on Wii. In fact, writing from the E3 floor, one Joystiq writer called Rhythm Heaven “one of the most delightful experiences I’ve had in the last week.” No word on how delightful his week was otherwise, but that still sounds good to me.

Be ready to tap out when Rhythm Heaven releases later this year.
