The latest issue has yet to reach my mail box, but apparently Nintendo Power has the first concrete info about Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. Oh, and there are official screens too!

Here’s a sampling from NeoGAF of what awaits you in the new Nintendo Power:

- True GTA game – sandbox gameplay, open-world environment, gritty crime narrative.
- M-rating
- Isometric camera angle
- Cel-shaded polygons w/ black borders
- good touch-screen implementation – “tasteful” minigames, streamlining interface
- UI based on a PDA – hub for email, contacts, map, music player, GPS, stat-tracking
- stats uploaded to Rockstar Social Club website via Wi-Fi
- missions designed for shorter periods of play, arcade quality
- aiming with control pad, auto targeting with R button
- subtle autosteer
- chain gun, flamethrower
- good portion of Liberty City is modeled in the game (different routes than console games)
- no probems with load times, draw-in or frame rate
- lots of pedestrians, cars, etc on screen
- real-time weather effects, 24-hour day/night cycle
- lots of radio stations to listen to (more instrumentals than vocals)

There was no word on the Wifi feature, but I think that’s a pretty good start.

    pretty good start indeed

  2. Ah . . . is this just more or less a remake of the original two GTA’s then . . . ?

  3. j@ko says:

umm… I’m confused about these graphics. Can’t say this is a good first impression.

  4. ResidentialEvil says:

Since so little is known, so far, I’ll not make much of a comment. But I have to agree with j@ko a little bit.

    J@ko and ResidentEvil:
You guys are only confused graphically because you may be to young to remember, or never have played the original GTA games. Grand Theft Auto 1,2, and London were overhead crime games. They were a little less “serious” than the newer interpretations, but they were way fun. It’s a great format for a DS game, very portable, very pick up and go, and still a lot of fun – Be warned though, it’s without a doubt a very different monster than the “current” generation of GTA games.

I always found it funny that while in the new series, Liberty, Vice, and San Andreas were all their own games, where in the original GTA, they were different “levels,” or different cities your progressed to as the same character. After conquering one city, you would move on to the next.

Hopefully the gameplay will still be fresh in these new versions, although I’m certain that some will have trouble adapting.

not as good as what i was expecting at all…

  7. Atlantis1982 says:

(Adding to Seaniccus) Plus, GTA 1/2 is available free to download.

  8. KillerHeroes says:

Are these actual screens or just really bad magazine scans?

  9. j@ko says:

I remember the original GTA and I played a little bit of GTA2. Those graphics were fine. This looks crappy though. I’m not digging the style at all. Doesn’t really fit a GTA game imo. I hope it ends up looking a little better than this.

  10. Jamie says:

I’ve played the original 2 GTA games and I hated them, this looks way too close to those games and I don’t like it… So far my response would be that I won’t be getting it, but we’ll see, I’ll hold off my decision until we get a bit closer to the release.

  11. Joey (jtman347) says:

wow…..I may not get this game after all

  12. droop4 says:

    damn kids and your close-mindiness
it’s sad because I’m not even that old- I’m not even old at all (18), and I still got to play (and enjoy) GTA 2 even tho what got me into GTA was GTA3.

The point is that this kids grow up into gaming thinking that anything that doesn’t resembles what they are used to is crap, and that’s a bunch of crap. At the time I wasn’t into gaming to the extent of buying my own console but after playing through GTA and starwars on the cube I was. I decided to start from GTAs roots an the older thing I could find was GTA2 an I loved it. The thoght “this is crap, top down camera sucks , or it’s 2D so it’s crap” never crossed my mind.

So kids- young, short, people or not, be open minded GTA 2 was in my opinion as much fun as GTA 3 or Vice City. Especially the humor factor! When I played GTA3 again after going through GTA2 I really missed that and the game seemed a little too palid

I saw the scans, and I’m happy about the game. I used to enjoy GTA2 a lot on the PSone, and this looks like it’s an extension of those games. I prefer this style over the current 3D versions for its simplicity, and arcadey fun factor.

  14. Lance says:

This game might be worthwhile. It would be nice if the game came with a GBA cartridge that’s empty and can connect to your PC via USB to copy your music to the Cart and listen to that music in game.

  15. benthedorklod says:

okay i know it’s already been said but…

damn those graphics look like crap. seriously. i know the original gtas had cartoony graphics but these just look _bad_.

  16. benthedorklod says:

seriously, what is that shot?! looks like someone took a polaroid of the screen, faxed it to someone, then that other person scanned their new copy of it into the computer.

either that or just really poor graphics.

on a completely unrelated note! just got final fantasy tactics advance and i love it!

  17. Red Mozzie says:

    Yes, yes, yes!

I’ve been waiting a looong time for some more top-down GTA action. This looks awesome. Now, who will you have to run over to get big bonus points? In one there were Hare Krishnas, in another Elvis impersonators.

(Btw, that’s clearly a magazine scan from Nintendo Power, which is made fairly clear in the post. Read before commenting, people.)

  18. ResidentialEvil says:

Ummm…I assure you I am NOT “too young” to remember the original GTA games. I’m probably older than anyone on here. That has nothing to do with the game looking bad to me. I said it looks bad graphically because….I think it looks bad graphically.

  19. Derek says:

ResidentialEvil, don’t worry. It’s just a part of the “if it’s on a Nintendo platform and it looks like garbage, that’s okay and you’re wrong to point out otherwise” mentality that is unfortunately spreading like a disease ’round these parts.

  20. [...] Nintendo Power scans seemed to be hit or miss with you guys, with the cel-shaded, original GTA look turning more than a [...]
