Even Netflix doesn’t think Wii’s lack of HD is a big deal

Monday, February 8th, 2010 at 11:58am by Jack

netflixHDAs much as some may piss and moan about the lack of HD on the Wii, it’s just not that big of a deal, and won’t be for some time.

Netflix agrees.

Now, when HD is ubiquitous, and “hardcore” developers like Epic Games can say 80% of their customers play core games in HD, and not just 50%; and companies like Microsoft ship HD cables, you know, in the box that contains their HD consoles, you’ll see an HD-capable console from Nintendo. And at that time you’ll naturally see pro-HD streaming quotes from Netflix CEOs. However, by that time, ironically, HD still won’t be that big of a deal, because it will simply be the Way Things Are.

I’ve never really cared about the whole HD thing. For me, it’s never been about how sharp the image is, but how creative the imagery is, and I don’t see HD as being essential for enjoying that.

Gizmondo surely has OPINIONATED article writers… even with the the FACTS by Netflix, they still are quick to deny things and push the HD crap… Obviously 1 in 12 Netflix users (PRE-Wii) are into HD… Yet the article writer still bitches.

What happened to REAL journalism… y’know, reporting facts without adding your own opinions?

@fesworks it’s still around, but few and far between in concerns to most gaming journalism.

Maybe it’s not such a big deal, but at least I would like to see antialiasing or upscaling in the Wii games it would be much better.

HD honestly isn’t a huge difference, the only thing that pisses me off about the Wii’s lack of HD is that 3rd party developers like Rockstar and Ubisoft are just too lazy to make a 400p downport of their PS3 games, so I’m missing out on fun titles that I love. It’s not that it couldn’t be done on the Wii, it’s just that they haven’t.

I can’t agree with downplaying the significance of HD.

If you don’t see the big deal, that’s fine. But no one should try to make those who enjoy having HD movies/games feel guilty or silly for doing so. Playing PS3 games and watching films in 1080p adds tremendously to the experiences, in my opinion—I have no interest in using Netflix on Wii.

That said, though, I’m sure most Wii owners actually interested in using Netflix on Wii won’t care at all. HD is a big deal to me, but for others, it isn’t.

And you know what? That’s just fine.

    course i agree with derek.

everyone’s allowed to like what they like without being marginalized.

and i’d add that following the crowd is no way to choose or rationalize personal tastes.

Gawd. HD is soooo rediculous. Just like attractive women. Who cares if their looks are mediocre. Doesn’t make that much of a difference, right guys?

Riiight… Anyway, HD’s nice, and I certainly appreciate it, but to reuse the good old proportions argument, most people don’t notice HD; of those that do, most don’t care; of those that do, most don’t care/notice after 20 minutes of watching SD. Yes there’s a minority for which it’s a sustained transformative experience, and they’re VERY vocal, and certainly everything will be HD in the full course of time, BUT… the reality is the TV companies needed a new thing to sell customers after everyone went colour, then flat CRT, then widescreen, then flat panel, etc. regardless of how necessary it was. The sad truth is there was a terrifying statistic that most HD television owners have their systems improperly connected and receive only SD images, but are still pleased and convinced with their ‘HD’ picture (I wish I could find that link).
