Dust off your chain-saws

re4wii.jpgWe all know that Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition’s biggest new feature was its wiimote integration, but tipster Jake Barber sent us an e-mail that may interest those of us that never got a chance to play the game with its original controlls, or those that played it so much that they were to condemn their chain-saw controller to the obsolete-game-accessory-closet:

“Many people may not realize that they can use their old GameCube
Controller on their shiny new copy of “Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition.”
It can be very useful if you dislike the new controls.
Step. 1: Plug a GameCube controller of any kind into slot 1 of your
GameCube controller ports on the top of the system, under the flap.
You heard me. Any controller. That includes that Resident Evil 4
Chainsaw Controller for the GameCube, that you hold so dearly to your
heart.

Step 2: Turn off the Wii controller. You can do this by poping the
batteries out, or just waiting for it to shut off Automaticly.
Step 3: Try it out! The control layout is the same as the GCN version’s.
Many people will think it’s pointless to use a GCN Controller, when
the Classical Controller is a fair alternative. But, control-wise,
the GCN Controller is definately more ergonomic.
So, try it out! Even if you already love the Wii Controls as I do,
you can do this to present a new challenge. Or, if you’ve already
played the GCN version, at least it’s nostalgic!”

  1. I’ve just gotten used to the Wii controls. Don’t think I’ll be able to go back to GC now. Although that is useful to know.

The Wii controls are way better IMO.

  3. Deax2er says:

    sorta defeats the point…Oh well

ANY controller? Hmm… Well, I did always think that the bongo controllers would be excellent for mowing down zombie-esqe folk.

  5. ResidentialEvil says:

Were you hurting for an idea for an article? And yes, it does pretty much defeat the purpose if you just use the old control scheme.

    @ Deax2er & ResidentialEvil

It does defeat the purpose, although ??? was sure to point out that from Jake B., “…It can be very useful if you dislike the new controls…” I for one love the new Wii control to the game, although I still want to come back to my Cube controllers, every once in a while. (Even though it will not be with RE4 (GC)). I never liked the idea of two discs.

  7. InvisibleMan says:

I wish all other Wii games had that option! While I love the new control scheme of RE4 on Wii, there are some other Wii games that could do without it…

  8. Jake says:

I agree with InvisibleMan. I wish there was that option for Excite truck.

I still want people to try it out if they miss the old controls though. I mean, of course I’m going to use The Wii controls, but playing with GameCube Controls… I might do that some time.

I agree with InvisibleMan as well. While the Wii controls are pretty much flawless, I’ld rather have the optional Gamecube controls for titles where the controls are poorly implemented or unnecessary, like Scarface or the upcoming Bully.

Does it play exactly the Gamecube version, though? I’m pretty sure they increased the amount of enemies in the Wii version because of how much easier it was to aim, which might put you at a disadvantage with the older control system.

How could one possibly *dislike* the Wii controls in RE4? Pointing and shooting with the Wiimote is a revelation.

But why must I still aim the rifle with the thumbstick? LAME!!!

  11. PaddyBoy says:

I love the RE4 Wiimote & Nunchuk controls and actaully aiming the scoped rifles with the thumbstick too.
Sniping shouldn’t be too easy/fast IMO or the weapon balance would suffer, at least in this game.
And there is nothing like sniping approaching enemies in RE4, constantly trying to get them under the crosshair. Wouldn’t be fun otherwise.

    ;)
