Where be Puzzle Quest?

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007 at 12:17pm by Staff

The boys over at Penny Arcade are tripping the light fantastic — hardcore – over this new title for DS called Puzzle Quest (it exists for the PSP too, but I mean, come on, I mean really…).

No less than a comic and a blog post are up over there; and I must say my interest has been tickled to the point where I may lift my no game purchases until Super Paper Mario ban and go get it. But first, I need Infendo input: what’s the big deal with Puzzle Quest, and why should I get it and stop playing Bejeweled on my celly? (Puzzle Quest is a rough descendant of Bejeweled).

PQ is great because well I find that I always have time to play a quick game, and given that most puzzle game are play my one level and then the next you don’t feel like your getting anywhere.. but with PQ you feel that with each puzzle you solve, with each item you craft, you have move forward , you have gained exp, gold, and sometime you even items. This progression has a hold on me that makes me want to just play more and more. That is why I think the system of RPG mixed with Puzzle is so great on the one side its a small and simple to learn puzzle game.. but on the other side its all part of what I also love in games, character progression and RPG adventure. This game is a must for any game player.

You can also Try the PC Demo, and check if it really is something you would like :)

Probably one the best features is just that the puzzles are quite quick, compared to bejeweled or lumines where, if you are playing well one game might take an hour.

damn kotaku, their side by side review left me all confused… I saw the game on gamespot (on a psp) a long time ago and thought it looked great and seemed like a lot of fun.

Now when I heard that there would be a DS version I thought: yes, i can get that awesome game, and I reckoned that the graphics should be the same on both platforms because, its bejeweled right?
But no kotaku slams the ds version being bad in the presentation area, the one place I hoped it would shine and elevate it self above other puzzle games…

Oh well I’m starved for a good puzzler so I’ll probably get this anyway.

Here’s a selling feature for you… I went and picked up two copies this evening. They were damn hard to find, but when EB said they had a couple in stock, I asked them to hold them and I’d come right over.

I set up one of our DSs for my wife who has never touched them before. She plays these crazy bejeweled type puzzle games online a lot… as do my two daughters (which is why I bought two copies).

Anyway, she’s been sitting at the table playing straight for over two and a half hours.

    She’s loving it.

    But… but… why Bejeweled??

Couldn’t they had made a Puzzle Quest using something a little more frantic, like Meteos??

I just got done playing the demo in this thread, and I LOVE THIS GAME! I’m highly considering buying it for the DS now

Great timing on this! As a big fan or PA, it really peaked my interest too. It is hard to get a sense of what the game really *IS*. I may just have to make a leap of faith.

Of course both the local GameStop and EBGames do not have it in stock. They are usually pretty worthless. I’d order it online but I don’t see where I can use gift certificates online. I’ve had a couple of EBGames gift certs I’ve been hoarding.

PQ is tremendously addictive. The RPG/strategy elements wrapped around the puzzle are very deep, with lots of options, sub quests and other things to do.

The presentation on the DS is very good, don’t worry about Kotaku running it down.

Easily the finest DS game recently and dangerously compelling.
