Sega shifts portable development to DS

From Chris Kohler at Game|Life:
In an interview with Nikkei Shimbun, Sega managing director Hideki Okamura says the company is shifting its focus from PSP to Nintendo DS, pointing out that there is a title they will release this year that will “surprise absolutely everyone.”
And remember that point I made about competing with Nintendo on first party titles and seeing it as a challenge rather than a dead end? I think Sega’s got it (for the obvious reason that they already have some head-to-head competition with Nintendo under their belts):
We have to do a lot of thinking about titles for Nintendo’s hardware, because Nintendo’s own titles are extremely strong. It really is difficult to sell a title as a third party. What that means is that we’ve got to go after it with force: “heave-ho!”
Start with Sonic, Sega, and we’ll see where this relationship goes from there.

How sad is it that I no longer care which platform Sega supports? The only support I want from them is on the VC. Sega hasn’t made any great truly great games in ages.

Sonic and the Secret Rings is supposed to be good. It got a 83% review by some site at least.
How about they don’t keep raping Sonic and *gasp* develop a new IP? Let’s not forget about Shadow the Hedgehog..

Shinn’s got it: as I mentioned in another comment before, Sonic and the Secret Rings seems to be a solid Sonic title, according to the reviews. Let’s try that before we hammer the last nail on Sonic’s coffin!
And what is this I read about “Sega hasn’t made any great truly great games in ages”?!? Are we forgetting Panzer Dragoon Orta (probably the best-looking game in the Xbox), Otogi, Otogi 2, Jet Set Radio Future, etc…? Look beyond the 90’s, people!

Give me some Panzer Dragoon with Saturn-level graphics, some vectorman, and some Space Harrier, and I’ll be a happy guy.

The Wii Sonic game is what Sega should have done since going 32 bit. A simpler game that works and its fun and doesn’t try to compete with 3d platformers. That’s what makes Sonic unique:
PURE SPEED!!!!!!!!!!
And that’s what this game is made of. I give it a 9 just because if they follow this trend number 2 will get a ten. A retro-updated game if you will.

If you remember the first Sonic games, the fun part was running and avoiding obstacles at 80mph. Jumping to get to the top of something almost felt clumsy and slow. This game is kind of like Sonic 1 mixed with Excite Truck. Get the game. at the very least rent it to understand what I mean.
And that secret game will be Seamen.

I REALLY hope so, vakerorokero, I really hope so!
Seaman II FTW!!

Sega, please give us Nights on the DS! I am sure there is a way to control the action with the touchpad.

I’ll bet the new secret DS game will be Phantasy Star Online!
