Reggie reconfirms Mario and Zelda in deep development

In an interview today with Xplay, Reggie Fils-Aime was once again bombarded with the question that’s on the mind of every Nintendo fan…Where’s Mario and Zelda?
“You know, it’s a great question…I have to just step back and remind people…Smash Brothers is less than a year old. Kart is less than a year old. We’re only getting to a year anniversary for Galaxy. We’ve just launched all of these great franchises. Do we have those specific teams working, the Mario team, the Zelda team? Absolutely. You’ve got to give us a little bit of time to create these games. They will be coming. I’m not going to spoil the surprise of when. But those games are all coming.”
I totally agree with Mr. Fils-Aime. Give them a break. I want Zelda as much as the rest of you, but the developers aren’t going to shorten the classic Nintendo polish cycle just to get more titles to the consumer.
It sounds like we might hear something in less than a year’s time. Let us hope so.

You know what I want? F-Zero and Starfox.
You already patented F-Zero Z, Nintendo. Just go on and announce it for next year now…

Reggie brings up a good point… on normal circumstances. On our current circumstances, where 80% of Wii games suck and aren’t worth owning, people really want to know when the next potentially great game is.

I get really annoyed when people demand that Mario and Zelda make an appearance at every Nintendo event. Would they prefer that Nintendo take the Activision approach and release these games every year, year after year and drive them into the ground?

This has been pissing me of too, how so many gamers seem to forget about huge releases (and we’ve had more at once recently than in a very long time) the minute they finish them, and already expect new versions on the way, and only get angry when faced with the fact that truly good games take TIME to make.
Stupid instant gratification society we live in.

Now I like Mario and Zelda games just as much as the next person. But I TOTALLY AGREE with Reggie here on this subject. Just leave the man alone and stop asking him about it already. When Nintendo is ready to announce news of the games, they will. Do some gamers out there ACTUALLY WANT to have their names taken?

“Reggie brings up a good point… on normal circumstances.”
His point is even better now, fool. These aren’t normal circumstances. Nintendo is under no pressure to have to top the 360 or PS3 for the foreseeable future. The market will speak for itself, and resources will be diverted from HD games that suck up funding and turn little profit for Wii games of any stripe that have the mere potential to do better.
In fact everybody should applaud this response, as the stereotypical “casual, non-gamer” company would be attempting to squirt these out as fast as UBISoft.
Seems like certain critics of Nintendo want to have it both ways and in both holes at the same time.

While I agree that a lot of the Wii games are not worth owning– but that is true of any system (especially the PS2 of last generation). The Wii does not have game droughts like the Gamecube and N64 had. You want the next ‘great game’? Go get ‘De Blob’ or Wario Shake It, download Mega Man 9 or Bomberman. All of these games are, at the least, very good if not excellent and all of these games released in the last month.
Third parties are starting to bring some good stuff– let’s not overlook them just because they don’t have ‘Zelda’ or ‘Mario’ in the title.

Woah, woah Jeff, no need to call somebody a “fool.”
davey1983, the difference with the PS2 was that while there was tons of shovelware as well, the PS2 also had a lot of great games to back it up. However, you do bring up a good point about the third parties making a comeback, and there are a lot of great looking Wii titles on their way. Warioware is very fun, and I’ve heard nothing but good coming from De Blob. So I apologize about sounding so vulgar in my last comment, and so pessimistic, because the Wii is still worth owning.

I suppose that technically Nintendo is always “working” on a new Mario or Zelda title. I mean, even if just one designer is only thinking about the next game, it is in the “developmental” or “planning” stage.
So nice dodge by Reggie. But I agree that a good game is worth waiting for. So even if they are only in the “thinking” stage for the next Mario game (which I’m sure they are a lot further along then that), I’ll still be glad to wait for whatever they come up with.

In other words, see you fall 2009.

It’s official: the gaming community is made up of whiney, spoilt little children. We’ve just had a great conference with some promising titles on the way, and instead of being thankful, gamers are crying about Mario and Zelda.
And you can bet that were Mario or Zelda games to be announced, many of those same people would be accusing Nintendo of “rehashing”.
Can’t win.

Honestly I enjoyed the hell out of all of the games. Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Corruption, Brawl, and Mario Kart. In fact I’m still playing a few of those. I won’t miss any of them for a year or more. But if Nintendo were to announce a new Zelda say at CES or GDC or something. They say it’ll be released Winter 2010, but the game will get pushed back to 2012 then I’ll become a little ticked off. Nothing pissed me off more than when Nintendo delayed TP five times.
