Penny Arcade gets sappy about grandma’s DS

Check out the latest strip from Penny Arcade. Do your grandparents play DS or any other video games?
[UPDATE]
The articles that go along with this comic are a must-read, especially Gabe’s. His statement that “I don’t play games to beat them I play games to see them.” was completely spot on for me.

I wonder what game is inside that pink DS… Dementium: The Ward? Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings? Pokémon Pearl?

Probably some Metroid Prime Hunters. Grandma loves to frag in heated online battles against other hunters.

Whoa, how timely. I’m thinking of buying a DS for my 81 y.o. grandma. With Picross DS… posted this to the “10 best DS” thread… what other puzzle games should I take a look at?

Have to say I am the opposite of wanting to see a game. What I care about is that the actions I carry out are fun, cut scenes and animations are nice and all, but if the gameplay is boring or tedious it looses me. I am not saying that people who enjoy that pay off are wrong, I just don’t get it.
My whole paradigm shifted one day when my bro watched me play MGS. I was moving through at a good clip and going from cut scene to cut scene I looked up at him expecting him to be wowed and he said “Do you play this game or just watch it” I realized there was not that much to do in the game, so I turned it off and we played Mario Kart it was eye opening for me and changed the way I view games, but hey if you dig playing for some kind of payout fill your boots bud.

Wow, couldn’t have said it better.

@Hunter
I really don’t think what your saying is incompatible with PA’s view. I really really enjoyed reading their latest blog posts last night. I felt like, “I’ve always known these guys are cool but hell, they GET me”. I’m sure that what Gabe is saying over there is not purely about the pretty animations, about the eye candy… It’s more about experiencing the game. It goes without saying that a pretty game that sucks still sucks. However, what matters the most to me as a gamer—and, to my satisfaction, apparently to Penny Arcade as well—is not so much competing with the game but enjoying the experience. And cutscenes and animations are a big part of that, if we’re talking about a story-driven game. But so is, obviously, gameplay. For me, the main point PA is making is that feeling good and having fun while playing takes priority over beating the game, getting top score or whatever. As a guy actually rarely has time to finish games, I send that wholeheartedly.

Point taken Negrin, you are right the views are not incompatible.

the correct response was “Yeah, so are talkies and racial integration.”
