Nintendo reports record sales week

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007 at 8:07pm by Press Release

DS LiteREDMOND, Wash., Nov. 27, 2007 - In the first week of the 2007 holiday shopping season, Nintendo of America has sold more Nintendo products than at any other time in its history. This includes more than 653,000 Nintendo DS™ portable video game systems, 350,000 Wii™ home systems and millions of games and accessories throughout the United States - and the season is just getting started.

Nintendo DS set a new all-time sales record for Thanksgiving week, eclipsing the previous mark of 600,000 Game Boy® Advance systems sold during the same period in the United States in 2005. Nintendo DS remains on track to be the top-selling video game system of 2007.

Nintendo’s 350,000 Wii systems represent the highest one-week U.S. sales total outside of its launch week one year ago. Wii has been dubbed the must-have gift of the 2007 holiday season and has been placed at the top of numerous gift lists. Nintendo has repeatedly increased its shipments and its fiscal-year sales forecast for Wii in an attempt to meet soaring demand. Wii reached 5 million sold in the United States faster than any video game system in history, after only 12 months of availability there.

Both Wii and Nintendo DS have continued their yearlong momentum into the holidays without altering their prices. And both remain attractive values for shoppers: Wii has an MSRP of $249.99, while Nintendo DS has an MSRP of $129.99.

“As shoppers look for ways to maximize their limited holiday spending money, they turn to gifts that can be used by the entire family,” says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Wii and Nintendo DS offer something for every member of the family. They’re the most fun video game experiences at the most affordable price.”

With higher gas prices and fuel costs, and the lukewarm expectations for the 2007 holiday shopping season, Wii and Nintendo DS might be just what Santa ordered: Thirty-five percent of consumers said they plan to spend less than they did last year, according to a survey conducted by Opinion Research Corp. for the Consumer Federation of America and the Credit Union National Association. Similarly, a USA Today/Gallup Poll showed that 25 percent of Americans expect to spend less on gifts this year than they did in 2006.

Note that the internal Nintendo of America numbers referenced in this release represent sales from Sunday, Nov. 18, through Saturday, Nov. 24.

    Unbelievable.

Personal story about this. I was one of the poor fools who was sleeping in the snow on the eve of Black Friday. I took my Wii and my 15 games to Thanksgiving dinner and within five minutes of starting it up, my aunt and my mother both asked how they could get one for their kids. I knew they wouldn’t be able to sleep outside for one, so I did it for them.

There was a line of more than 100 people outside more local GameStop. Every single person, without exception, was there for a Wii. And a melee ensued. Luckily, I got two for my mom and aunt. But it was an ugly, ugly sight.

Nintendo is going to sell a ridiculous amount of hardware this Christmas.

This Christmas belongs to Nintendo no question.

Congrats Nintendo. I personally have so much stuff I want from Nintendo this Christmas that I think Miyamoto is going to be the one delivering my presents this year.

Not directly related, but I think the writers’ strike is going to start hitting hard pretty soon when all of the content on TV and theaters dries up. Then what are people going to do with all this time and expendable entertainment dollars? hmm… Nintendo and the games industry in general will only benefit.

Having said that, I wish this damn strike would end already!

Good to see some solid numbers, instead of vague percentages from Sony.

    Don’t call it a comeback.

    My girlfriend wants one…

I have no idea how I’m going to get my hands on one with sales like this.

Yeah, I’ve been looking for a Wii since November 19, 2006 - and to no avail. But my mom has agreed to get one for my brother and me this Christmas… if she can find one.

Do you think it’s even plausible?

My God, Nintendo must be ROLLING in profit.

Also, do you guy suggest purchasing games and Wii remotes off Amazon or do you just suggest going to GameStop or something?

    @ bryan3089:

I don’t see why it would be bad to get games and remotes on Amazon, but I’ve never had trouble finding such things in stores. Everywhere from GameStop to Wal-Mart is usually well-stocked in such things. Although, to be honest, you may not get so lucky with numbers like these showing up, so perhaps Amazon is your best bet after all. Good luck and I hope you get your hands on a Wii! It’s great fun!

Anyway, there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t thank my lucky stars I bit the bullet and waited out in the cold in October of 2006 just to preorder my Wii. Otherwise, I know I wouldn’t have one. And I’ve never been ill or angry with my purchase. I’ve never wanted to take it back to the store or sell it on ebay or anything. But I constantly have such thoughts about my Xbox360, which just goes to show how much more fun the Wii is.

    @boisv
I’ve been here for years…Hahaha I hope I’m not the only one that remembers that song.

I guess that bubble’s going to pop anytime now(/end sarcasm). I’m really surprised that the Wii has sold that much in one week, when I haven’t even seen one locally since September. I would be curious to see the software numbers. For some reason I’d imagine them to be higher than “teh internetz” or popular theory would have us think.

    Anyway, good job Nintendo!

Looks like Nintendo’s new system is showing some promise…
