Another sign the DS might be the next PS2

I’ll just come right out and say it: another reason (besides dizzying sales) the DS might be the next PS2 is because the dual screen portable has a lot of crappy games. And by a lot, I mean… well, a lot. Just peep any release schedule and you’ll see a slew of stinkers just like the PS2 before it. That’s not a bad thing, that’s just what happens when hardware sells like crazy; software publishers jump on it like salt on a peanut. Regardless, anyone in the room think the DS can actually outsell the 115 million strong PS2?

Uhmm. . that picture, while I’m having breakfast . . .DO NOT WANT!

As for the DS reaching the PS2, well, first the DS would have to have the failure rates of the PS2, since probably 10% of those are replacements. But ya, I can see it hitting 100 million.

Did you really have to do that?

Y’know, maybe I’m just a bit more game-picky, but I seem to notice a TON of crappy games for every system I’ve ever owned… and of course, it stands to reason that more games are going to be made for a more popular system… so I’m figuring maybe it’s the same ratio of good to bad, just magnified because the system’s more popular.

So yeah. I agree with what you’re saying, I guess.

Yes, because Nintendo is constantly releasing new “must-have” versions of the DS. The new colors on the phat probably didn’t entice too many people to replace their DS, but I think a significant number of DS owners went out and bought a lite to replace their phat. Some people will rush out and buy a limited edition that appeals to them (Final Fantasy, pokemon, etc) or will jump on a new color that appeals to them (I’m waiting for NES red)

Yeah, I’ll totally get a black DS Lite one of these days, but I couldn’t wait for the black one when the white one was already available. The same is true of the colored Wiis, though for the Wii I’d want a nice deep cobalt blue rather than a black one. Unless someone makes fake woodgrain decals for it like they did for the DSL.

    I categorically disagree, Blake:

By sheer number, yes, there might be more crappy games on DS than on any other platform, but not by much.

But proportionally, the ratio of good games vs. bad games seems to be far higher for DS than for the other platforms! I’m finding more interesting, original, and deeper games on DS than on Wii, and other consoles are not faring too well, either. Problem is, the games that get most publicity are, of course, the movie and TV tie-ins, which are pretty bad overall…

But some developers are putting more effort in DS titles than in other platforms… I read, for instance, that the best version of Spiderman 3 is the one on DS (IGN said so, and the videos seem to back that claim).

And then there are the original games that nobody has heard of, much less tried… (Etrian Odyssey, for instance, which has absorbed my gaming time 100% this past couple of weeks!)

Here, an example of a typical multi-platform game’s average reviews, across all platforms (Spider-Man 3):

The gap between the DS version and all others is pretty big… difficult not to notice!

I’m sure it WILL outsell the PS2 (though it’s still a long way off).

Simply put, the DS is getting incredibly popular BUT you should also keep in mind that in a house where there could be 1 PS2, there could easily be 2 or even 3 DS systems because it’s an individual system whereas the PS2 is meant to be shared.

And being the greedy people we are, if they can truly expand to the general audience as well as the hardcore that’s gonna end up being a massive sales number.
