Dead Space, future Wii title, began development on original Xbox
Friday, February 13th, 2009 at 10:59am by Jack
Dead Space, the well-received space horror game developed by EA that’s slated to come Wii-side soon, was initially developed using original Xbox hardware.
Since the Internet is the consummate example of fairness and anti-hypocrisy, I fully expect all the people who whined about The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess being originally developed as a GameCube title to come out of the woodwork and apologize.
Only fair, right?
Oh, and this clever little blog joke just got real ironic.

February 13th, 2009 at 11:05 am
Do you even know what irony is?
February 13th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Sure I do. Do you?
Seriously, you’ve been slipping up lately.
February 13th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
How is that blog post the use of words for something other than their obvious meaning, aka irony? Just another example of Jack Fail™.
Oh, and while I wasn’t one of the people that complained about Twilight Princess’ Gamecube roots, you might want to learn the difference between a target platform and a temporary development platform due to unavailable hardware or technical issues. TP’s target platform was the Gamecube, not the Wii, though thankfully it didn’t hurt the game in its port. If you really want to take a shot at Dead Space in this regard, you can mention it was actually powered by a modified version of the Godfather engine, a game whose target platform actually was the Xbox and PS2.
February 13th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
@Richter?
Are you serious? Are we really explaining irony on a blog to try to make someone “fail”?
I’m feeling generous so, let me oblige. The linked Kotaku post is ironic because the authors meaning was to make the Wii look silly. The implication is that it’s obvious that a last gen console like the Wii could never run a game like Dead Space. But now that we know the game was originally built using the xbox (and from the video looked pretty darn close), it actually makes the poster on Kotaku look silly. So, what was intended (make the wii look silly) and what happened (the poster on kotaku looks silly) were different, thus the irony. And no, irony doesn’t have to use words. You may want to read a little further than the first definition listed on whatever website you just looked at. You’ll probably see examples of DRAMATIC irony, which is more accurately what what we have on Kotaku, when the audience knows something that the poster at Kotaku didn’t know at the time.
Now, with regard to “target platform and temporary development platform”, that’s just a bunch of nonsense. Tons of games start life on previous gen consoles. It’s absolutely normal. If the console cycle falls in the middle of a games development, they make a choice, go with the old, go with the new, or try to hit both. It’s that simple. Hell, games like Kameo were originally developed for the N64 and moved all the way to the 360.
February 13th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Well this got negative real quick. And it’s all because a coupla guys couldn’t use The Google before posting.
February 13th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Used Cisco is my new hero now.
February 13th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
wait what? i thought tp looked the same on gamecube and wii.
deadspace never looked like an xbox game.
what did i miss?
February 13th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Jeff,
Yeah, sorry for that. It’s not about using the google so much, it’s about people getting pissy about Jack and his style. They either think they’re smart: “Do you even know what irony is?” Or they’re in such a rush to make him look bad (they love to type FAIL) that they don’t get their attacks straight.
Now, I’m all for calling out a blogger for one reason or another, INCLUDING Jack, I mean, you blog, so you expose yourself to criticism, but if you’re going to criticize, at least make sure you know what you’re talking about first.
Or not. I suppose in this case it’s good for a few laughs on a Friday, which is generally good for everyone.
February 13th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
@Deep,
“what did i miss?”
What I think Jack is referring to is when lots of people were bitching that Twilight Princess wasn’t a “real” wii game because it wasn’t originally planned for the Wii. I don’t think it had anything to do with how it looked. I think most people agreed it looked pretty good on either platform.
February 13th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Once Dead Space Wii is released and looks just like its 360/PS3 counterparts I will admit we witnessed a bit or irony. Until then, I’m calling BS on this post.
February 13th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
@Dave,
Looking identical won’t be required for it to be ironic, but, from your first post, I’m guessing you didn’t really understand the term anyway, so whatever.
February 13th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
@ used
i thought people complained because the wii got a mirrored gamecube game with some wii controls seemingly thrown in.
seemed like an ok argument to me.
dead space 360 was substantially different than what it would have been on xbox. a great deal more different than just adding some new controls.
February 13th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
@Deep,
I’m sure some did. Based on the context of Jacks post, I don’t think those are the people he was talking about.
February 13th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
hm- never heard of those people though. this seems ambiguous. maybe the author should clarify.
February 13th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
This would only be “ironic” if EA were developing Dead Space for Wii 2 using current Wii tech as they did for Xbox -> 360. There’s nothing “ironic” about a crappy port.
Once again, Jack fails at intelligently striking back against his imaginary internet foes who pee on the Wii all day.
February 13th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
@dave,
“This would only be “ironic” if…..”
Read my post again, and perhaps a first year high school lit book or two, you’ll get it eventually. The different types of irony can be difficult to understand, but not impossible, given some time and effort.
@Deep,
I’ve heard of them. They were quite annoying at the time, but clarity is always good. The whole thing is just silly. Look at any game that released on a last gen console and a newly launched next gen console. The next gen game is often a bit disappointing because it’s not optimized for the newer hardware. The Wii is no different. Games like Tomb Raider Legend, King Kong, Gun, Madden, Twilight Princess are all good examples.
February 13th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Wow, this blew up nicely. Cisco, you’re a riot. I don’t need Google to know what irony is, thank you. The “other” kinds of irony were tacked on because no one ever used the word correctly. If Jack wanted to say cosmic or dramatic or whatever kind of bogus irony suited the situation, he should have said that instead. And you obviously didn’t understand my point about target hardware. Dead Space, like most games, was altered mid development to target a new platform. TP was essentially completed as a Gamecube game, then ported to the Wii with some additional features. Again, that’s no knock against TP on the Wii, it’s just a different situation from what Dead Space went through.
February 13th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
“don’t need Google to know what irony is, thank you. The “other” kinds of irony were tacked on because no one ever used the word correctly. If Jack wanted to say cosmic or dramatic or whatever kind of bogus irony suited the situation, he should have said that instead.”
Nonsense.
First, Jacks post was accurate even for the purest definition of irony. See my post. Second, the “other” types of irony are still irony. Period.
Bogus irony? Now, THAT is a riot. And, I think it’s even ironic, that the guy claiming someone else doesn’t know what irony is, in fact doesn’t himself know what irony is. To be more specific, this would be that “bogus” form of irony known as dramatic.
February 13th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
“”This would only be “ironic” if EA were developing Dead Space for Wii 2 using current Wii tech as they did for Xbox -> 360. There’s nothing “ironic” about a crappy port.”
You fail to grasp the concept. Certainly there are some here who have reading comprehension issues too. The ironic thing is the BLOG POST which did that tired meme of using photoshop to degrade a 360 screenshot and say “HURK HURK Wii version.” But the Dramatic Irony (read: Irony) is that the game started out that way anyway.
“If Jack wanted to say cosmic or dramatic or whatever kind of bogus irony suited the situation,”
Look, just because you didn’t know they existed beforehand, doesn’t mean Jack can’t use them. It’s the same way you can refer to a cheeseburger as simply a “burger” and people with basic reasoning skills can understand. We aren’t casual readers here, so there’s no need for him to simplify every term and draw directions in crayon.
February 13th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
@Richter
My thoughts exactly.
@Cisco
If you really consider this irony than I suppose you’d be the type to tell you’re buddies “you’re having a beer” while you’re sipping a Hooch.
February 13th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
I consider it irony because it is irony.
I’m a simple man.
February 13th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
@jeff,
*clap*
*clap*
*clap*
Well put. It just goes to show that the aforementioned post on Kotaku was ironic in multiple ways.
February 13th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
DaveRage, quit being a stock blog character troll. You’ve been schooled and wounded. That much is understood. There’s no need to pound your fist. Jack is correct. That post, is ironic. In your attempt to engage in a battle of wits, you have failed. It’s doesn’t matter what your personal opinion of what is ironic is. You are, of course, entitled to your own opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts. Irony has set definitions. Jack’s example has met one. He is correct. You are wrong. And no amount of pounding on the keyboard like a gorilla nor hurling insults will change it in your favor.
Depart with dignity.
February 13th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
“Depart with dignity.”
Good call Jeff. I’m out. Hella snowstorm in the midwest and I wanna get home while I still can. Have a good weekend everybody!
February 13th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
Jeff, Used Cisco –
Time to get You’re asses to my neck of the woods for a few bottles of hooch, don’t you think?
February 13th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
I am the MOST BEHIND. Dang. I’m not good with talking about games made on other systems because I never got other systems…
So, this Dead Space thing…was intended for the ORIGINAL xBox… recreated a la Twilight for the 360… and it’s now coming to the Wii…and you peoples are worried about…?
So… what’s the problem, again? I still don’t see it. What, was Dead Space crappy for 360? If it’s just the same game with Wii controls thrown in (and TP was good for both systems), and it was good to begin with…
So you guys are worried about it being less than the original just ’cause it’s coming to a console with lower graphics. Oh.
Did I get it right?
February 13th, 2009 at 5:24 pm
And irony doesn’t have anything to do with this.
February 13th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
@ Lite
You are absolutely correct. The reason people are responding like this though, is most likely due to Capcom’s lackluster efforts on “Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop”.
February 13th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
hahaha- this place is great.
jack, i’m calling you on inciting this little panic attack of a conversation. i doubt it’s even about whether you used “irony” right.
it’s because you LOVE to find someone out there and try to rub nintendo’s success in their face because apparently they wronged you in the past and you want to let them know that no, no, you haven’t forgotten.
honestly man, when you write with intent to show up someone else, it’s pretty close to just trolling for these responses. here’s an idea: let’s get some balanced conversation by characterizing others as “whining” and then suggesting they should apologize. to you. for doubting nintendo. you truly are the rush limbaugh of this site.
also, lite’s comments are still on point and i totally get daverage’s frustration, and i am wondering how long used and i will play nice before we start making fun of each others names again? heh heh
also, just got on left 4 dead with my pals and it’s fantastic. second jack’s previous recommendation. also, m/kb > any console control. and while i’m off topic, i’ve also gotten WAY back into gta4. dunno why but now i want to put it back at or near the top of my my best of 08 list. offtopic-man…. away!!!!!
February 13th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
If one looked for truth on the internet today, they can rest assured it certainly lies in this comment, “you truly are the rush limbaugh of this site.”
Well said my friend, well said.
February 13th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Jack, we know they’re already there, since they might as well be your clones. I’ve never seen such ignorant people rush to the defense of someone they weren’t related to or having sex with. It’d hardly surprise me if they weren’t just mirror accounts for you.
February 14th, 2009 at 3:06 am
Yeesh guys. Serious business. Somebody rain on your wedding day? (See how clever that almost was?)
February 14th, 2009 at 10:51 am
I’m going to say that yeah it’s kind of ironic, but at the same time the argument about comparing it to TP is flawed. Dead Space may have started out on the Xbox but it certainly didn’t end up on the Xbox and I doubt anyone would say the game would have been the same on the Xbox as what we got on the 360, at least not with a straight face. The TP we got on the Wii IS essentially the exact same game that is on the GC.
I kind of see both sides of the “argument” here. No need to get fussy though.
February 14th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
Ugh. Now see, we aren’t even talking about the game.
I agree on the Dead Rising thing there, though, Phazon. So… um…
what exactly were we supposed to be talking about? i.e. What did this all start out as?
Irony still has nothing to do with this.
February 14th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
wow.. um… happy Valentines Day!
