Quick: Which publisher has released the best platforming game recently: Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, or… THQ? If you guessed any of the first three, you’re wrong. De Blob bests Braid, Wario Land: Shake It, and LittleBigPlanet Beta as the top recent platformer.
Granted, all four games are solid (though Shake It is surprisingly the least compelling). But I can’t get over the fresh gameplay, brilliant soundtrack, and lush visuals of De Blob. I played it all weekend, I like it so much. Have you tried it?
Official site: De Blob [THQ]

I picked it up on Friday in the UK (a suprise as IGN doesnt even list a European release date yet. Ive hardly given it any time at all as my Wii is in the common room space in my uni flat, so I may give it more this week.
So far, it feels really original and fresh. It uses the WiiRemote in a fun way and s far without glitches.
The game looks like its a childs game but while children can tackle the game and continue easily, there are deffinitely challenges for adults to get.
So far, so good!
i have not tried it, but will reconsider picking it up now.
I have to wait until payday, but I’m soooooo going to play the hell out of this one.
I wish there was a demo I could try. The game is definitely interesting, but I’m not sure how much I’d enjoy the actual game-play.
It is pretty fun. However, I did run across a glitch. In one of the multiplayer stages I got stuck between 2 buildings and couldn’t get out, thus my wife was able to paint the town without any challenge from me. 4 out of 5.
It was great, but the controls are maybe not as intuitive as they could be. I saw this when I watched my wife play it. She kept trying to swing the Wii remote in the direction she wanted De Blob to jump. That’s doesn’t work: you use the Wii Remote to jump and use the Nunchuck control stick to set the direction. It made sense what my wife: I might have done it too when I played.
I love the way they incorporate the sound effects into the sound track. In one music mode, the sound effects form a kind of skat singing over the jazzy soundtrack.
We loved Shake It too, by the way. Simple sure, but the animation really sells it. It was like playing an old Bugs Bunny cartoon. We laughed a lot playing it.
Ho-hum jumping controls aside, I’ve had more fun with de Blob than I’ve had with a platformer in a long time. It’s not Galaxy, but it’s damn good.
Finally, some coverage of de Blob.
I’ve been playing this game steadily since last Tuesday, and I still love it. Two more levels to go (plus plenty of unlocked missions I haven’t tried yet), and I am still charmed by the simple premise. I did get stuck between two structures at one point and had to restart the level, but it is so much fun, I didn’t mind too much.
No, but the positive endorsements it has received is really tempting. However, I heard the same things about Boom Blox, but I got bored of that game really quick.
darn I was really about to get this game a short while back…But didn’t for some unknown reason. I really regret not getting it now…Hmm
“I wish there was a demo I could try. ”
Yeah. Keep wishing. I have been wishing for Wii demos myself…=)
I think this game sounds very cool.
I will have to look into it!
Is it true you have to waggle for every jump in this game??
KillerHeroes: de Blob is much more interesting than Boom Blox.
I like Boom Blox quite a bit, but I can certainly understand how some would find it boring; it can be a somewhat shallow experience. de Blob, however, is actually a more traditional “full game,” so to speak. There’s a cool story, clever gameplay, objectives, polished graphics with some nice effects, refreshing characters…it feels very Nintendo-like, actually.
Except for the controls. Jumping with an upward flick of the Wiimote isn’t nearly as precise as it should be for a 3D platformer.
Just my thoughts on the game so far. Hope it helps your decision.
@ daverage:
yes to do every jump you do an upward motion with the wiimote.
Another thing I liked about this game was the Inkt’s which resembled the raving rabbids very closely. Same type of humor.
Thanks for the extra info Derek. I was going to get it. I just wasn’t absolutely sold on it. I think I might take the chance and support a good third party game given the glowing recommendations.
is it only my or does this game suck? I went to the game-shop and asked for a nice wii game, see what he recommended, and he said: “Buy De Blob, if you don’t like it, come back and change game” and I was like: “well, ok, i’ll give it a try”, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! Sucked big time, or maybe i haven’t given this game a serious chance… I’m think of changing it to Battlion Wars 2, or something else.
it is probally the worst game for wii ever even though nintendo wiis suck big time …
and you know it!
THQ happens to have released also this past month what is arguably the best Strategy game out there right now for the DS: Lock’s Quest… (although I’m more partial to Disgaea, but that is a port).
Good job, THQ!
Yeah, de Blob is an amazing game.
I’ve experienced those jumping problems myself, as well.
But how often does a game come along that when you play, you find out after completing a level that you took 45 minutes to complete it – and you didn’t realize it because you were having fun?
That’s definitely a signal of a game that’s a success. You play it at the rate you want, you have as much fun as you want, and you still progress through the game.
THQ did a great job.
i dont see this game as fun, i just have to get my money back or exchange a game for this where i bought it. but i feel like there isnt any other game that will stay for long in my household, so i guess it will stay
An excellent game. It’s worth buying for the soundtrack alone.
The levels are nice and big too and it definitely encourages replay value because you feel compelled to cover every inch of the stage with colour.
My only gripes are the slightly imprecise jumping and the z-targeting system which, for me has a tendency to target the wrong thing at critical moments (e.g. a paint pot just next to a water fountain when you’re trying to fight a group of enemies). I also think a level map would be useful (as opposed to just the compass) as the levels get pretty big later on and it becomes hard to keep track of where you are. The game also didn’t need to incorporate a lives system at all either as dying has you continue from exactly where you left off regardless of whether you collect any of those red tokens or not.
Anyway, apart from those minor issues (the most salient of which for me is the z-targeting), it’s a fantastic game. If it was made by Namco or some such, I’m sure more people would be going crazy over this now…
So the jumping is imprecise AND you have to waggle every time to do it? Yuck, count me out.
I plan to get this as soon as possible.I haven’t played it yet but I now know that those of you who don’t like this game have horrible taste.
