Zelda movie reeks of CD-i production values
Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 at 11:17am by Blake
Maybe it’s just me, but the new Legend of Zelda movie trailer looks low-budget and goofy. Yet another story that should have remained a video game. Good luck with those real-world tights, Link. Hopefully it’s just a lame IGN April Fool’s joke.

They should have gotten a bigger Ganondorf, like the Big Show.
April 1st, 2008 at 11:27 am
I admit, I was duped and I shouldn’t have posted this lame hoax. It was only minutes after that Jack kindly reminded me that today is April 1. Gotta stay on my toes!
April 1st, 2008 at 11:31 am
Zelda should never be a live action movie. NEVER.
April 1st, 2008 at 11:44 am
I hope this an April Fools joke.
April 1st, 2008 at 11:46 am
It is a joke. You have to admit though, while horrible production values for a real movie, they also happen to be incredible production values for a fake one.
April 1st, 2008 at 11:53 am
Ah, I too thought this was real. Forgot about it being April 1st. But you know, even as crappy as it did look, it also held some appeal, but maybe only for the Zelda-loving.
April 1st, 2008 at 11:59 am
Lol. Thought we might have heard something about the movie being made before a trailer was released. Looks awesome! I hope someone takes the joke and makes it real!!!!!1!11eleven!11!!!
April 1st, 2008 at 12:29 pm
You’re wrong. It looks high budget and goofy.
I mean, just look at that Gohma scene! I know you’d love to see a full scene of that battle, cheezy story aside.
…atleast, I would. D:
April 1st, 2008 at 12:30 pm
so this was announced today…? good thing it’s april fools, or I would take it seriously.
April 1st, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Link looks like michael jackson!
April 1st, 2008 at 12:31 pm
Admittedly, they cast a terrible link.
But good Link’s are hard to come by…or maybe they didn’t try hard enough.
April 1st, 2008 at 12:56 pm
hehe- nice.
check out virgle too. i can’t wait to watch zelda on mars!

Pretending an april fools joke is real does not count as an april fools joke.
April 1st, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Oh, Blake, it’s almost sad that you fell for this. It’s April 1st, and this is the internet, keep your guard up, or you’ll end up looking like an idiot.
April 1st, 2008 at 2:15 pm
In all seriousness, the only thing that looks BAD to me is Ganon. Get him some more natural make-up and I think it’d be a good low budget film. It already looks better than any Uwe Boll movie I’ve seen.
It does make me wonder though: if they went through all the trouble to make the trailer, will they complete the movie… it does say it’s coming April 1st, 2009. Here’s hoping IGN comes through with it.
April 1st, 2008 at 2:17 pm
I’d love to see a Lord of the Rings-style cinematic take on the Zelda series. Not something as cheesy as this.
April 1st, 2008 at 2:20 pm
I have to agree with LeLoup, this looks much better than all the other fan-movies I’ve seen before. It was obvious from the beginning it was an April Fool’s joke, but it was well done. Rainfall Films has done a few good movies it seems, I looked at their site, and I’d like to see the others in their showreel.
April 1st, 2008 at 2:41 pm
I laughed. This is classic.
April 1st, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Agh. I can’t believe you fell for it, but please pull it off!
These are horrid blashphemous pictures! I can’t stand it, even though it’s a joke.
April 1st, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Wow I can’t believe IGN did all that just for a prank. Kudos to them. That actually didn’t look half bad.
April 1st, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Well, although I think it would be kickass if Legend of Zelda ever got made into a movie, I don’t think it’s worth the risk of it being terrible. I’d rather have no Zelda movie than a bad one. Mario Bros, for example. I love the idea of any Nintendo movie, but it’s just not worth the risk. That’s why I was glad when all of the rumors of a Metroid movie fell apart. No exceptionally good video game movies really come to mind when I think of it, and that’s what Zelda would deserve.
April 1st, 2008 at 3:08 pm
thank god that shot is not real. what a horrid link. i would be skeptical if they ever made a zelda movie, remember what they did to poor mario?
April 1st, 2008 at 4:55 pm
I realized instantly that this was an April Fools joke, but then made me really want a Zelda movie…
April 1st, 2008 at 4:59 pm
I got a good laugh out of this today, after finding out it was a joke.
April 1st, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Oh god, my eyes! *Projectile vomits all around the room* My god, it’s horrible. I agree that for a real movie, the production values are bad, but for a fake movie, they’re quite good. But that doesn’t change the fact this is horrendous. Hilarious. But horrendous all the same.
April 1st, 2008 at 6:24 pm
Oh and one more thing: It’s like they went out of their way to find the most hideous and inappropriate people on the planet to play all the parts. Though I suppose that may have been intentional, seeing as how it’s an April Fool’s prank.
April 1st, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Let’s face it, folks: there is no way a Zelda real-life movie would look good, fake or not… Just seeing Link’s costume in the real world has “disaster” spelled all over it!
April 1st, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Guys…this is actually real:

April 1st, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Yes, it is like the Batman Year One movie..
http://www.collorastudios.com/projects/bde/bdemain.htm
They are now making a Batman Superman movie…It’s the future of movies so to say, because all you need is Youtube, bittorent, and blank DVDs to make money…
April 1st, 2008 at 7:46 pm
I was going to do a Two Cents in 60 Seconds on this… but I’ll wait to the end of the week to see how this develops when its fully confirmed one way or the other (when April 1st is over).
If real: seemingly low-budget, but production and direction looks great.
If fake: MAKE IT REAL DAMMIT!
April 1st, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Realistically though, the production values were actually fairly good. Not full budget feature film good, but made for tv movie good… It’s gotta be fake, but a pretty impressive short film on the part of the creators.
Seriously though, didn’t you get a little tingle of geek-gasm when Ghoma opened its eye or he looked over the desert at the blady things? It captures what a movie should be better than anything else I’ve seen, but I’m still gonna hold out my skepticism until someone can prove to me you can make a good movie about solving puzzles in dungeons (considering they already proved they can’t do a platformer or first person shooter…).
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:51 am
I mean for a fake video that was pretty good production. They needed a cuter Zelda, but all and all that wasn’t bad. I mean that had to take a lot of work to put on that fake.
With today’s technology, a live action Zelda movie would not be out of the question.
Oh, and the other reason this had to be fake was that it stayed way too close to the story lines of Zelda. We all know movies go so far off track it’s not funny, hence why they all fail miserably.
April 2nd, 2008 at 1:15 am
As awesome as a Zelda movie could/would/should be…this…would not be awesome.
At least pick a total babe for Zelda.
April 2nd, 2008 at 1:28 am
Dude, The Production value on this is almost as bad as the drunk Link on XPlay. Though I think it would be an awsome movie if done right.
April 2nd, 2008 at 3:49 am
Thats genius. Hail April Fools!
April 2nd, 2008 at 10:04 am
Even though I knew it was a hoax, I thought the story presented in the trailer was really good. They captured a good essence of what a zelda game is. I just didn’t like the character costumes they used. Especially Ganon’s. That was such a terrible costume. I wouldn’t mind seeing a fleshed out version with better costume and makeup work.
April 4th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Dan, asside from low budget CG, I did not see anything really bad about the production. Direction and editing of the trailer was excellent.
April 5th, 2008 at 9:35 am
I had sent them a message before IGN posted it was a fake. I wanted to hear from them just the same.

Hi Fesworks,
Yes, the Legend of Zelda trailer was an elaborate April Fools joke. It was developed and distributed by IGN, and produced by us here at Rainfall. Thank you very much for the compliments though!
Thank you for your interest, and for writing.
Cheers,

I knew beforehand that the trailer was an April Fools’ joke, but am I the only one that thought the beginning was fairly impressive?
Overall, it wasn’t THAT bad…yes, Link looked iffy and Ganondorf looked terrible, costumes were poorly chosen, but otherwise that was a fairly good trailer, hoax or not.
