Classic Commercials - Mother
Monday, May 19th, 2008 at 6:00pm by JakeLook forward to this new weekly feature where I dig down to the bottom of the interwebs trash to bring you retro commercials from Nintendo’s finest. This week I uncovered the Japanese commercial for MOTHER. The little gem was released 1989 for the Famicom Disk System in Japan only.
Maybe the TV ad kept it from hitting western shores. Creepy…

Eh… It was the release of the Super Nintendo that canned the original release of Mother. Which was going to be called Earthbound, the game was actually hyped a lot in the early issues of Nintendo Power. However, when the Super Nintendo was released they stopped production of the translation which was at about (80-90%) done, and started work on Mother 2 (Earthbound) for the SNES. Most people thought it was the same game that was being made for the NES just upgraded to the SNES.
Until the internet decade hit, and people found out about the previous title. The commercial isn’t that creepy IMO.

Holy. That IS creepy. I feel like that should have won in a German arthouse film festival.

My favorite part is the kid in the glasses on the left.
You can tell he has no idea what he is doing when they bow to the giant robot, he’s just watching the others to see when to move.
