Chibi Robo: Park Patrol – Walmart exclusive?

GameSpot checked in with Nintendo for an update on Chibi Robo: Park Patrol for DS. They got an interesting response:
Chibi Robo: Park Patrol will launch October 2. The game, which features an adorable miniature robot who wants to clean up the environment, will be available exclusively at Wal-Mart stores nationwide.
I’m not the biggest Walmart fan, but I’m definitely glad to hear the game is still getting a US release! Are you surprised at this exclusive retailer move by Nintendo?

This seems kind of weird to me — is it common for games to have exclusive retailers? Because no other example comes to mind.
The DS is a huge market, so pulling exclusive rights must’ve cost a pretty penny. That said, if the game is any good then this could end up being a very sweet deal for Walmart!

^^^Highly doubt it.
I have only one example in mind of an exclusive game(Tenchu DS for gamestop) and it….well sucked. I’m not saying that this isn’t going to be a good game but I think only these under the radar titles are the ones to be exclusives, so it isn’t really a big deal.

To me it is kind of scary. I don’t want Wal-mart having any say so over the kind of games I play. I do not normally buy my games at Wal-mart anyway. Locally they don’t seem to know what to carry, so most of the games, that they have, end up being mostly lousy and lame. I end up going to places like Gamestop or EB Games. Their prices, at times, seem to be better also.

It vaguely reminds me of when Electroplankton was sold in North America only online or at the Nintendo World Store. I’ll buy Chibi-Robo whenever or wherever he comes out .. most likely ordering it online from Wal*Mart.

well, i remember sonic pinball party for gba was a target exclusive, and i loved that game. i do find it very odd though for a first party game to take a similar fate. its ok though, i love chibi-robo, and i work at a walmart, so i’ll have my buddy in electronics hold a copy for me.

Hope this fares better than Toys’R'Us “exclusive” games did in the 90’s…. most (in)famously, the Sega Nomad.
I’ll buy Chibi-Robo, but I doubt whether the bulk of Wal-mart shoppers will.
