Aussie to pay Nintendo $1.3M for pirating New Super Mario Wii

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 at 11:34am by Blake

pirateKids—piracy is wrong, and it’ll cost you if you’re caught, as one 24-year old gamer discovered this week.

Reports the AFP, “An Australian man has agreed to pay Nintendo 1.3 million US dollars for illegally uploading New Super Mario Bros. Wii to the Internet six days before its global release, the firm said Tuesday.”

How’d they catch ‘em? “Computer forensics experts,” arrrrrrrrr!

Sky Crawlers contest winner announced!

sky crawlers wii

Last week we announced your chance to win a copy of Sky Crawlers for Wii.  All of the entries were awesome, but the winning entry belongs to Instant_Awesome.  Here’s an excerpt of his comment:

About 15 minutes into our Pictochat session, a third person entered. Someone else on the plane joined our Pictochat room! After chatting for a few minutes, it became evident that it was a little boy flying with his mother.

Runner-up prize goes to Hurley and his weird story of time travel.  He gets large container of ranch dressing.

Congrats again to our winners and be sure to enter our new Glory of Heracles contest!

New hardware, MotionPlus game mentioned by Miyamoto

Miyamoto

“Did I do it again? Did I let something slip?! I just get so excited!”

As the recipient of a “Special Achievement Prize” during a symposium at the 13th Annual Japan Media Arts Festival on Saturday, Shigeru “loose lips” Miyamoto had time to spill two tidbits of information while up on stage. Not only has Miyamoto confirmed that Nintendo is working on some new hardware, but he mentioned that he is hard at work on a Wii MotionPlus game other than the upcoming Zelda title.

What’s the best shooter on Wii?

Monday, February 8th, 2010 at 8:38am by Blake

Although Xbox, PlayStation, and PC carry a lot more first-person shooters, said games exist on Wii—even good ones. But they’re few and far between. So what would recommend for trigger-happy Wii owners looking for a moving target: Metroid Prime 3, Link’s Crossbow, Medal of Honor, Modern Warfare Reflex, an entirely different game? Do tell.

Review: The Magic Obelisk
Delivers a Magical Puzzle Platformer

Thursday, February 4th, 2010 at 6:00pm by Zacko
The Magic Obelisk introduces us to Lukus, a spunky little tree spirit, and Popo, his fairy-like light spirit sidekick. The game starts off as Lukus ventures into the world to find a good place to plant himself and grow into a tree. However, Lukus is forced to stick to the shadows. You see, if he stands in the sunlight, he will turn into a tree! Don’t worry though, you control Popo as he interacts with Magic Obelisks to cast shadows to help Lukus on his journey. This simple yet brilliant mechanic lets The Magic Obelisk shine as one of the puzzle platformers on WiiWare, even if there are a few minor imperfections.
GRAPHICS, SOUND, AND PRESENTATION
The Magic Obelisk has a beautiful (at the risk of my manliness I’ll even call it cute) storybook style. As you progress to each new level, the pages of the book flip and the next level pops open like a pop-up book. The characters are animated and each has a great personality attached to them. As you encounter animals, robots, ghosts, and others, you will notice a distinct personality to each. The soundtrack for this game is great, adding to the cheerful and fun nature of the game.
GAMEPLAY & CONTROLS
For the most part, the game plays very well. The mechanics are a fresh new approach to a puzzle game. The different obelisks (red, blue, yellow, etc.) cast different types of shadows, adding additional complexity which is used in later levels. Speaking of which, this game gets really hard. I found myself very frustrated with the difficulty at times. The difficulty in earlier levels was due more to the learning curve involved in learning to convince Lukus to go where you want him to go. At times I found myself wishing for the analogue stick on the nunchuck. For the most part, it was simply a matter of getting used to it. The later levels, however, were just plain hard. It provides a great challenge to players, and you feel really satisfied when you figure out how to pass one of those really difficult levels. Also, with over thirty levels, you’re definately getting your money’s worth.
THE LAST WORD
For 500 Wii Points, The Magic Obelisk is a no-brainer. Its charm, challenge, and (*shudder*) cute tone set a great standard for other developers for WiiWare. Other than the learning curve and issues with controls, I can’t find anything wrong with this game. Its just a great, fun puzzle platformer that will make you smile.

What would you like in a New Pokémon game?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010 at 5:09pm by Will

1265232958167Zac, Infendo writer and podcaster extraordinaire, has posed a question in the new Infendo forums… What exactly do you expect in a new pokémon game?

His wish list is as follows:

1. I want an immersible 3D world, especially with 3D battling. The 3D animators thing makes me think that this is on the slate.
2. An online town/room/whatever where trainers can go to battle, trade, etc on wifi that is not just some weird mini room with only two people. Think mini MMO that you can go to.
3. Much deeper and emotional story. Make me give a damn about the characters!

What do you want?

Review: No More Heroes 2 Desperate Struggle

Monday, February 1st, 2010 at 11:45am by Will

NMH2Review

No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle is one of those games that comes every once in a while that sets the bar for what games could be. Sadistic hack and slash bloody adventures with sarcastic one liners that would make Sam Raimi proud.

If you played the first game you know that the game is set in a fictional city in California, called Santa Destroy, where you follow the exploits of Travis Touchdown, an anime nerd turned top assassin in the UAA. The UAA, (United Assassins Association), is comprised of deadly killers, slicing, shooting, and detonating their way to higher ranks to determine who the the best assassin is in the world.

However, Desperate Struggle picks up three years after the exploits of the first game, where Travis has become somewhat of legend. It seems that Travis was the only one in the history of the UAA to just make it to the top and walk away like it was nothing. Some call him the “No More Hero”, many consider him the “Crownless King”, and well others want him dead.
