Review: Groupies will love Guitar Hero Aerosmith

Monday, August 4th, 2008 at 1:08pm by Blake

Everyone else? Not so much.

You see, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was not intended for rhythm game fans. Maybe not even music fans. It was made for die-hard Aerosmith fans.

Popular Mechanics thinks highly of Ultimate Band

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008 at 3:12pm by Blake

From the article entitled Top 10 New Games at E3:

For us, Ultimate Band was a best-in-show among the E3’s Rock Band wannabes. That’s a backhanded compliment, but for its intended 8 to 12 demographic, this game is brilliant. It scales up smoothly from simple to complex gameplay and faithfully captures the spirit of a rock performance. It’s also a much cheaper alternative to buying a slew of new instruments, or watching in horror as your existing peripherals are gradually torn apart by tiny hands.

Nice.

Rhythm Tengoku Heaven is a simple and infectious rhythm game that anyone can play. If you can tap your finger in time to music, you’ll get the hang of Rhythm Heaven in no time! Players hold their Nintendo DS system sideways like a book and tap their stylus on the touch screen to the rhythm of the music. Players tap, slide or flick the stylus to hit the right beat. Rhythm Heaven features catchy tunes, charming characters and a wide variety of rhythm games. Well-known Japanese music producer TSUNKU♂ helped direct Rhythm Heaven and composed the music for it. Be sure to hit the jump for screens and a quick teaser video.

With exception to the “frontman” controls, this game looks pretty fun. I’m suppose to preview it in Salt Lake sometime soon, so I’ll let you know when I do.

Review: Battle of the Bands

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008 at 2:06am by Derek

bobwii.jpgRhythm-based video games have garnered themselves an impressive cultural buzz, a fact perhaps most clearly illustrated on Wii.

Activision, for example, has had remarkable success on Nintendo’s system with its popular Guitar Hero series. Since its Oct. 2007 release, Guitar Hero III has sold 2 million copies on Wii in North America. And surprisingly, the Wii version has also become Activision’s top-selling Guitar Hero III SKU; IGN reported last Thursday 152,000 more copies were sold in North America last month.

With EA’s behemoth Rock Band franchise coming to Wii in June, it seems safe to predict millions more will be virtually rocking on Wii, gimped ports and all. Given the success with the genre on Wii, and the inevitability of blockbusters to come, the newly released Battle of the Bands represents a smart business move for publisher THQ.

Unfortunately, despite some unique ideas and genuinely enjoyable moments, Battle of the Bands doesn’t fully deliver on its interesting premise and never quite reaches the outstanding level of its powerhouse rhythmic counterparts on Wii.
