New SMB Wii features Mario, Luigi, and two Toads - “that’s it,” says Miyamoto

Coming out of the same Nintendo Power read-along that brought told us the next Zelda is going to be more of the same comes some disappointing news on New Super Mario Bros. Wii: There are only three and a half playable characters.

When asked about the playable characters being Mario, Luigi, Toad and Another Toad, Shigeru Miyamoto says “That’s it.”

When Infendo asked at E3, Nintendo staff told us that other characters might be a possibility, but warned us that nothing had been announced and they could not confirm or deny speculation.  It’s too bad too, because while one Toad has enough identity to stand on his own (a la Mario Kart,) next to Mario and Luigi a second Toad steals the individuality of both funky fungi sidekicks.

Give us the Princess, Yoshi, Geno, or even a Koopa - pallet swap clones are just weak. Let’s hope that Miyamoto’s “that’s it” refers only to what’s been announced, and is yet another cover for “rumors and speculation.”

Respect Nintendo’s heritage: Do you use chopsticks?

WARNING: This post is a stretch, even by Infendo standards. In any case, I gotta ask: do you use chopsticks when eating Chinese, Japanese, or otherwise Asian cuisine? I sat at a table last month among 10 other diners and was the only one using sticks. For shame. Sure, it’s difficult to transition from the convenience of a fork to miniturized cue sticks, but once you get the hang of it, it’s the only way to go. And I’m convinced it makes my Kung Pow taste better. Am I wrong?

Humble Iwata welcomes new challenges, competition

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 at 9:01pm by Jack

2407205Even when Nintendo president Satoru Iwata talks smack, he is humble. I expect nothing less from Nintendo’s relatively young leader, as he’s a business man that I hope many in the industry today and in the future learn from. Our games and experiences will better off because of it.

My feelings on The legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Update: The E3 Hands On

Saturday, June 6th, 2009 at 11:15pm by Will

Update: Hands On.

From what I understood from an Nintendo of America employee, Spirit Tracks is actually not a continuation of the Wind Waker series in terms of a sequel to Phantom Hourglass. Yet the game happens one hundred years after the events of Phantom Hourglass.

The one thing I was complaining about before was of course the train game play. I said it is very limiting to exploration, and I was right. You are pretty much stuck “on the rails” as you explore the land. Traveling between destinations is basically being on an on the rail shooter, as you can tap and shoot things with a bomb cannon once again. Besides that you can control the speed of the train, moving forward or just stopping, blowing the whistle to make creatures get off the tracks, and switching tracks to go to different areas. Track switching is done by either tapping a left or right arrow on your screen, leaving very simplified game play. (more…)

Metroid: Other M
So did anyone realize this?

Saturday, June 6th, 2009 at 2:41am by Will

In the trailer for Metroid: Other M, this commander asks “Samus” if there was “Any objections, lady?”. The only person in the entire Metroid series to even refer to Samus as a Lady was Adam Malkovich. Who is apparently dead in the Metroid Fusion timeline, so we know this game is going to be before that one.

In the trailer it suggests that their is another Samus, but according to an interview with Yoshio Sakamoto and Yusuke Hayashi the blonde woman in the trailer is not “a second Samus” of any kind, but another “very important character”. (more…)
