Mario Kart Wii to popularize turn-based online multiplayer?

Thursday, May 29th, 2008 at 10:13am by David

wiiwheel225.jpg12-player worldwide online multiplayer is a blast, but what if you want to play Mario Kart Wii with a friend and can’t find the right time to meet up? Send your friend a Time Trial challenge! In a way, it’s like playing Advance Wars through the mail. One player races on the course of their choice and then sends their result to a friend. That friend takes their turn when they have time to do so. Results are shared and you can brag the heck out of it; repeat.

Nintendo announces Mario Kart Wii tournaments

Thursday, May 1st, 2008 at 10:52am by Press Release

mkwii-wheel.jpgNintendo has thrown down the gauntlet for Mario Kart® Wii racers worldwide. Now it’s time to see who’s up to the challenge, as players take on the world in Mario Kart Wii Tournaments.

Every few weeks, a new tournament will appear on the Mario Kart Channel, an online feature that not only allows players to compete in tournaments, but also exchange race data with friends. Tournaments might take the form of a challenge for players to race a certain course as fast as they can with specific characters, or to collect a number of coins on a course using the Wii Wheel™ accessory or another control setup. They can feature unique rules or obstacles on the course.

The first tournament, which appears today, directs racers to compete for the fastest time on the Mario Circuit. Look closely though – something may be different. Players can attempt the challenge as often as they like during the duration of the tournament. Their best time will be recorded and added to the worldwide rankings, allowing players to see how they stack up against the best racers from around the world.

Mario Kart Wii commercial makes me hate Nintendo just a little bit

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 at 8:26pm by David

Have you seen this thing? It’s constantly on TV for me lately. So long, “Wii would like to play” guys. You had a long run. Hopefully Cowboy Jed doesn’t stick around for 18 months.

Infendo’s Top 5 Mario Kart tracks

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 at 6:04pm by Jake

839e.jpgWhat truly defines Mario Kart? Characters, items, and kart type are the main factors, but the course designs are truly at the core of each race. Since our first taste of kart racing back in 1992, Mario Kart tracks have undergone major changes. Some courses lack skill to master, while others such as the DS version require precision handling and a memorized course layout.

As many know, Mario Kart Wii will be releasing this Sunday (April 27) and it’s only proper to compile a small list of my all time favorite tracks throughout the entire Mario Kart series.

If Mario and his Mario Kart Wii friends drove real cars

Saturday, April 19th, 2008 at 7:28am by David

marioracecar225.jpgGame Daily takes a look at the stars of Mario Kart and tries to assign real life vehicles to each character.

What’s Italian, fast and looks great in red? Mario in a Ferrari. Mario is the most successful video game character of all time, and he deserves to drive the best sports car out there. Just as the Mario series is named after Mario, the Ferrari Enzo is named after Enzo Ferrari, founder of Ferrari. Both names carry a lot of weight and are practically synonymous with their respective fields. You think of Mario when you think about video games, and you think about Ferraris when you think about sports cars.

Head on over to see the rest of their list.

[Thanks, Seth!]

Mario Kart Wii First Impressions

Thursday, April 10th, 2008 at 8:42am by デール

mariokart_wiibox.jpgBefore I started home from work today my bu-chou (head of planning) told me her father had bought her daughter a new Wii game and she wanted me to go up and see it before I went home (bu-chou and sha-chou (CEO)) live upstairs from the company office).

Not to get into the complex family dynamics of my employment situation, let’s just say I got to sit down and watch a 6th-grader take the Wii wheel for a spin, and then played one course myself. Obviously not enough play-time for a review, but I can definitely list some things I’m looking forward to, and somethings that I’m not. (more…)

Nintendo dishes nitty gritty on Mario Kart Wii

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 at 3:11pm by Press Release

img1.jpgMario Kart Wii Fact Sheet (Nintendo)
The worldwide race is on with a whole new set of tricks, tracks and ways to play.

  • The Wii Wheel transforms the Wii Remote™ controller into a steering wheel that feels natural in anyone’s hands, while the Wii Remote and Nunchuk™ controller offer a classic control style for the Mario Kart veteran. In either configuration, players can perform speed-boosting tricks with a shake of the Wii Remote.
  • Players can race as their favorite Nintendo character, or even as themselves! Mario Kart Wii lets players race with their personalized Mii™ characters. And racers will see other Mii characters they have created cheering from the sidelines on some race courses. (more…)
