Malstrom

Nintendo, done in the Biblical sense

Thursday, May 15th, 2008 at 9:50am by Jack

225_four_horsemen.jpgIf you don’t read Sean Malstrom, you should. If that makes me sound like his official cheerleader, then so be it.

On his homepage today, Malstrom juxtaposes the Book of Revelations and four key Nintendo executives. The results are humorous, telling, and 100% enjoyable to read.

Come and see, the voice said to me. I looked up, honked my trumpet again, and lo! Come and see! said the voice again, for another horseman approached. This horse was all black, the rider could barely be seen, and he held scales.

Reggie laughed and said, “I am the Horseman of Disruption,” and he used the scales on the market that showed where the profit is and where the sales were.

He’s been doing a run-up to the launch of Wii Fit, which, for all intents and purposes, will disrupt gaming almost as much as the console it was built for.

Malstrom: Birdmen and the Casual Fallacy

Monday, March 24th, 2008 at 3:00pm by Jack

birdman2.jpgI would be remiss if I didn’t tell everyone here that Sean Malstrom, a long time source and even contributor here at Infendo, has been busy at work updating his web site and adding fresh Nintendo content (and having a cigar and some cognac too, it would seem).

Go take a look at his latest, Birdmen and the Casual Fallacy. Don’t let the name or even the length deter you from finishing this column. Like all of his work, it’s thoroughly researched and flows pretty smoothly. Oh, and it’s 100% accurate to boot: there are no casual gamers, and anyone who uses such a label to describe you or others is either out ot lunch or trying to label a group of people because they feel threatened that their precious complex games are going to be taken away from them.

Plus, we learn there’s a whole slew — a chronicle, if you will — of new articles planned for mid-2008. Color me excited.

Comment of the Week: Where’s Malstrom?; DS love

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008 at 8:17am by Jack

Gametaku raises some good points today, so he/she gets comment of the week!

Where’s Malstrom? I originally joined the site after reading a few of his great expositions. Aren’t we overdue for another one? And what are his and sites current views on the DS? Obviously video game companies read this site and even espond to some of its’ articles. How abot calling out all of the Lumines sequels and the lack of true an online enabled Meteos (none of that Disney crap) for the DS? Why havn’t we’ve seen an adaptation of that wonderful game for the Wii? Mabe it’ll come via wiiware and allow for custom planet uilding and online Wii Play (I had to do that).

Meteos was seriously the game that made the DS click for me many years ago. It was fun, quirky, and used the stylus wonderfully — but I would have loved to have been able to play my DS-owning friends. As for Malstrom, he’s an enigma wrapped in a riddle blanketed in a limerick. Your guess is as good as mine!

Wii BINGO

Thursday, September 20th, 2007 at 6:25pm by Jack

Wii BINGOI discovered this gem of a WiiWare game waiting to happen when perusing Malstrom’s secret web site yesterday evening.

It’s something to bide your time as you wait for titles like Galaxy or Smash Bros. or even Dewy’s Adventure to hit your system.

It’s Wii BINGO! Before you roll your eyes, just hit the jump and see what this is *really* all about.

Nintendo and the rising continent

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007 at 9:52am by Malstrom

Nintendo’s rising continentMalstrom is at it again. Today he’s delivered us a series of new (and lengthy!) articles about gaming, Nintendo and the future of the industry as a whole. I think with the outrageous success currently being enjoyed by the Wii and its software (you know, the software that ignoramuses say doesn’t exist yet) this is an especially timely delivery.

On a personal note, the reason I enjoy these columns is two-fold. First, the style is unique. There are no other writers out there today in the gaming industry that can hold a candle to the style that Malstrom brings in his articles. They tell a story, create characters and include real life quotes from industry movers and shakers, and advance the conversation instead of miring it in stagnation. Kind of like the Wii and DS.

Secondly, they use words from the analysts and industry players themselves. Oftentimes Malstrom simply sits back and lets some of these clowns set the stage for him. In this light, the columns cannot be dismissed as fanboyism or marketing because they employ something rarely seen in the putrid, vitriolic message boards and forums of today: facts. For those reasons alone, these are a welcome addition to Infendo. I haven’t seen these columns outside of Infendo (aside from at the now-retired Wiikly.com), so for that I thank Mal for the pro bono contribution. I think I speak for Blake, David and the rest of Infendo when I say thanks a million for these articles. But I digress, as usual.

On that note, here’s one of Malstrom’s latest, A Rising Continent.

Drowning In The Blue Ocean

Friday, July 6th, 2007 at 11:45am by Staff

From time to time, the Infendo mail slot will flop open and a reader submitted article will drift into our offices. Today we share with you an essay entitled “Drowning In The Blue Ocean” by Sean Malstrom.

lifepreserver.jpgI wish someone would offer a prize, of piles of money, ribbons, and a piece of chocolate cake for a good, simple definition of the word: “Generation”.

What an immense service it would confer on the industry!

Generation!

What is it? Where does it come from? What does it do? What ought it to do?
