If Mario was a… (Nintendo marketing on steroids)

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 at 4:19pm by Jack

250_mlss_mario_luigi.jpgA Harvest Moon Wii tractor pull? A real-life F-Zero supersonic racing circuit at the Bonneville Salt Flats? Mario juicing for his upcoming Super Mario Sluggers baseball promotion?

Nintendo will hold a pretty cool marketing promotion in NYC tomorrow as a man dressed as Mario hails cabs for Manhattanites, free of charge. What follows are just a few of the wild new Nintendo marketing promotion ideas I would like to see the Big N implement for some of their other first party games in 2008.

See what I mean after the jump and add one of your own.

If Mario and his Mario Kart Wii friends drove real cars

Saturday, April 19th, 2008 at 7:28am by David

marioracecar225.jpgGame Daily takes a look at the stars of Mario Kart and tries to assign real life vehicles to each character.

What’s Italian, fast and looks great in red? Mario in a Ferrari. Mario is the most successful video game character of all time, and he deserves to drive the best sports car out there. Just as the Mario series is named after Mario, the Ferrari Enzo is named after Enzo Ferrari, founder of Ferrari. Both names carry a lot of weight and are practically synonymous with their respective fields. You think of Mario when you think about video games, and you think about Ferraris when you think about sports cars.

Head on over to see the rest of their list.

Just download it, queue up the movie, and hit play on the MP3 when you see the Universal logo finish its zoom in.

Wii Video Games Blamed For Rise In Effeminate Violence

Monday, March 17th, 2008 at 10:55am by David

slapfight225.jpgMayor “Mumbles” Menino may be on to something after all.

Reported by the Onion:

The Wii, now the most popular gaming system in the country, most recently came under fire last month, when 15-year-old Los Angeles student Brian Strickland, who reportedly plays Wii Sports tennis, was expelled for flicking his wrist back and forth at a fellow sophomore’s head. And in January, 12-year-old Boulder, CO native Andrew Conner, a fan of the WarioWare: Smooth Moves game, was hospitalized after swinging his arm like an elephant trunk into members of the eighth-grade boys basketball team.

Have you noticed any change in children you know? Has Wii made you yourself more susceptible to fits of effeminate violence?

Wii crossbow

Ever find yourself playing Link’s Crossbow training and wonder, gee, I wish this was a little more real? Well, I doubt there’s a real live Wiimote crossbow in the works, so this will have to do.

Pokemon Pikachu gets what’s coming to him

Friday, February 29th, 2008 at 9:09am by Jack

InvisibleMan, I strongly suggest you look away or don’t play this video at all. That goes for the rest of you Pokemon lovers too. This video is traumatic. Traumatically funny, that is.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in comic form

Friday, February 22nd, 2008 at 10:42am by Jack

Super Smash Bros. Brawl comicThe boys over at Penny Arcade just received a shiny new import copy of Japan’s favorite game of the moment, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and suffice to say I think they’re enjoying it.

They fired off a pretty funny and fitting comic about it, at the very least. A teaser is at right and you’ll have to give them their due at Penny Arcade itself for the rest.

Is it March yet?!

Top-Selling Wii Titles (That Don’t Exist)

America’s Finest News Source, The Onion, just published a graph of the Top-Selling Wii Titles.  I’m confused since I thought Virtual Babysitter was a pack-in game.

Animated short spoofs Smash Bros. Brawl

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007 at 12:01pm by Jack

Smash Bros. Brawl spoofNintendo Wii Fanboy has a link up today to a pretty awesome, albeit long, animated movie featuring the ballooning cast of characters in Smash Bros. Brawl.

If you have five minutes or so to spare today, check it out. On more than one occasion the various scenes had me laughing out loud. And I agree with NWFB — Snake steals the show.

Gamestop Mario Galaxy call - prank version?

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007 at 9:00pm by David

prankcall225.jpgAstute gamer and comic diarist, James Kochalka, hit us with the following story:

Yesterday we got the Gamestop phone call from the voice of Mario telling us that our Super Mario Galaxy pre-order would be available to pick up today.  That was great, very silly and entertaining.  We picked the game up this morning.  This evening, I just got another automated call from Gamestop.  This one said Super Mario Galaxy would be released tomorrow evening and that it was rated “mature” and we would have to be 17 years or older to pick it up.

My first thought was that it was some kind of automated prank… but there wasn’t really much to it.  A very plain and blah reminder, but with the facts all wrong.

Anyone else out there get a bizarre call from their local Gamestop?

Assassin’s Creed DS to feature .. raccoons!?

Monday, November 5th, 2007 at 2:42pm by Jack

Assassin’s CrossingThe differences between Assasin’s Creed on the PS3 and what it will eventually look like on the DS sometime in 2008 are legion, I’m sure.

Graphics? Take whatever comparisons and trash talking were made between the PS3 and Wii in 2006 and add a healthy dose of HGH. The sound? The DS might as well be a Game & Watch in this situation, no offense to the great Gunpei Yokoi. Controls? Hmm. Debatable. Touch could provide an edge, but PS3 sorta kinda has rumble and neutered tilt, maybe, so we’ll call that one a wash. Sheer processing power? In this scenario the DS be powered by a wee hamster, I’m afraid to say.

Luckily, the blokes at Penny Arcade have an idea, and they’re pretty sure it’s the right one. On a more serious side, I’m wondering aloud today whether Assassin’s Creed will be one of two things: A card game, which could be cool; or a Ninja Gaiden DS title with Phantom Hourglass controls.

Regardless of what it becomes however, I just hope the enemy AI isn’t as atrociously awful as it is on the PS3 title.

Nintendo Spotting: Nice cans, Mario

Mario Cans

Mario, made of cans, for a charity event. That’s pretty much all I have to say about that.

Cans. Heh.

Anyone object to this fan-made Smash Bros. addition?
