Have any of our Euro/Aussie readers downloaded this yet? If so, how is it?

Wii Hacked to be Region Free

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008 at 8:00am by Will

StarFall

Apparently WiiBrew dev “Crediar” has released a Wii menu hack that allows you to edit some of the internal settings of the Wii. (Which could prove to be very dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing.)  You could say this is similar to the DVD Hack that was seen a few days ago, where you could play and watch DVDs on your Wii. However, Starfall is a hack that unlocks many of the Wii’s internal services, including games and certain channels, to become region free.

With this you can finally run that copy of Dairantou Smash Brothers X you bought thinking the Wii was region free to begin with, or even go and import some games that would never come out here. Let us all go and get that shinkansen game “Densha de Go!”. All in all, this is some interesting developements since WiiBrew developers seem to be doing amazing things with the Wii. I wonder what Nintendo’s response to all of this is going to be.

Commodore 64

Our Nintendo loving brothers and sisters in the EU have been regularly seen delays with game releases in their territory. Occasionally they’ll get something that North America doesn’t (like Tingle’s RPG). One of those EU specific joys they currently get to experience are Virtual Console games for the Commodore 64.

Wii set to dominate the U.K.

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007 at 9:31am by Jack

Wii in UKEurogamer, courtesy of GameIndustry.biz, reports today that the Wii will soon become the No. 1 console in the U.K. Bangers and mash for everyone! (that may be an Irish/Scottish dish, so I apologize in advance)

The Nintendo Wii is on course to hit one million sales in the UK within three to four weeks, according to official sell-through figures from Chart-Track, Eurogamer is reporting.

Currently the console is outselling the 360 in the UK by over four to one, and the PS3 by more than six to one each week. If it keeps it up, it should pass the GameCube’s lifetime UK sales figure of just over a million by the end of September.

Naturally, then, its next milestone will be to overhaul Microsoft’s lead in the UK - which, if the current trend continues, could be before the end of October.

Halo 3 comes out around that time though, which could be interesting. And messy. And pretty much fun for everyone involved. Well, not the game companies, but the gamers anyway. Kudos to Nintendo though, they didn’t even have to hand out 40″ plasma screens at launch to get this momentum. :-/

Wii enjoys third biggest sales week since launch

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007 at 4:23pm by Staff

This is a good sign from the U.K.: Wii sales this week were at their third highest ever since launch day. This shows momentum is still going strong, and that Nintendo was able to ship a decent number to consoles to the U.K. in spite of the shortages. Oh, and it was all done on the heels of a major console launch from another vendor.

Nintendo has told GamesIndustry.biz that Easter gift buying and a rise in the number of Wii units shipped to retail contributed to 25,000 units being sold in the UK last week.

Leaked Chart-Track figures showed that 17,000 PlayStation 3 units were shifted during the same period, while the figure for Xbox 360 stood at 11,000. A spokesperson for Chart-Track declined to comment on the data.

According to a Nintendo spokesperson, “Last week was Wii’s third biggest sales week since launch. Everything we are shipping, we are selling.”

The spokesperson conceded that the figure was boosted by the availability of more stock than usual last week, stating, “Sales in previous weeks weren’t as strong as 25k. More units are shipped some weeks than others.”

Shortages still plague the North Americas and elsewhere, even in light of this up tick in production, but at least Nintendo isn’t insecurely flooding the sales channel or using “units shipped” terminology, right?

Chick Chick Boom! - new free web game from Nintendo

Thursday, April 5th, 2007 at 6:30pm by Staff

Nintendo of Europe is apparently in an Easter mood. Available online (and probably a lot of fun in the Wii browser) is a free game called Chick Chick Boom. It’s sort of a cross between Worms and Rayman Raving Rabbids. It was created by the same folks that brought us Mission In Snowdriftland last Christmas. (There’s even a cameo by Chubby Snow.) After a couple rounds, I’m hooked.

Nintendo apparently still producing GameCubes

Friday, February 23rd, 2007 at 3:00pm by Staff

The other day we reported that Perrin Kaplan claimed Nintendo has stopped production of the GameCube. Over at EuroGamer, they have word from a Nintendo UK rep who says that the GameCube is not out of production. If their unnamed source is to be believed, this is just another example of Perrin either being poorly informed by their corporation or she’s making up things as she goes along. So, do we create a “Perrin-ism” tag and we all keep enjoying a good laugh whenever she speaks or should we just stop making posts that feature her?
