Fils-Aime tells IGN Disaster isn’t a $50 game

Thursday, October 30th, 2008 at 3:07pm by Derek

As if two years of development struggles and trips to the drawing board weren’t enough, Disaster has hit another serious roadblock.

Reggie doesn’t like it.

According to IGN’s Matt Casamassina, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is unimpressed with Disaster: Day of Crisis, the new and oft-delayed action-adventure title from developer Monolith Soft.

Said Casamassina on his latest Nintendo Voice Chat podcast:

We hung out with Reggie, and basically, he doesn’t think Disaster is a $50 game. Especially in terms of audio, which he said is laughable. He said he’s going to watch it and see how it performs in Europe. If it does well, you’ll probably get it in America, and if it’s a bomb, you probably won’t.

Disaster: Day of Crisis was released Sept. 25 in Japan and Oct. 24 in Europe. It has not been given a North American release date.

Disaster aptly named, development struggled

Don’t be fooled by the subtitle. For developer Monolith Soft, Disaster’s crisis lasted much longer than a day.

Nintendo has posted an interview with the development team for Disaster: Day of Crisis. According to an English translation on Nintendo Everything, the game suffered several snags during development.

Approached by Nintendo to create “something epic” for Wii, Monolith Soft began work on Disaster in early 2006. Development lasted less than a year before the project was scrapped due to quality assurance.

When the project was revisited in late 2006, Monolith Soft went back to the drawing board. A new schedule and budget were adopted, new gameplay elements were considered and development began anew.

Disaster’s original build used the Wii Classic Controller for gameplay. The controls were revised to utilize the motion recognition of the Wii remote. The game’s developers expressed interest in a sequel in the interview, a decision that relies solely on the first game’s sales.

Disaster: Day of Crisis is just Time Crisis in the rain

Monday, September 29th, 2008 at 12:04pm by Jack

There’s a bit of internal discussion going down in the Infendo HQ today regarding Disaster: Day of Crisis. Blake, from on high up in the Infendo throne room, threw down this video morsel to the likes of David and me in the Infendo dungeon, where we pump out posts for the site without the benefit of light or electricity (we snail mail the posts to Jake, who, being web-savvy, uploads them for us).

Long story short, Blake poo poo’d on Disaster’s ho-hum on-rails arcade graphics, while David defended the title’s look and feel. I’m still on the fence, leaning slightly towards Blake, which is a bit of a flip-flop for me on this title from earlier this year. Simply put, I’m asking what the “hook” of this game is today, because to me it seems like this title is nothing more than Time Crisis… in the rain.

Even though the story looks cheesy, it sure beats the crap out of this trailer.

Disaster commercial campaign stars…YOU

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008 at 1:04pm by Derek

Nintendo has added the first commercials for Disaster: Day of Crisis to Japan’s Nintendo Channel. Naturally, they’ve ended up on YouTube, and we’ve got the video above. Nintendo Wii Fanboy has the scoop on the Japanese text persistent throughout the video:

The ads are built around the theme of the game as an action movie with you as the protagonist. Each starts with “Movie star on Wii” and keeps a persistent arrow with the word anata (Japanese for you) pointed at the onscreen Raymond Bryce. The commercials end with the tagline “Starring: You.” A pretty exciting way to start your fake acting career!

Disaster launches Sept. 25 in Japan and Oct. 24 in Europe. There has been no word on a North American release.

Disaster: Day of Crisis to launch in Japan on September 25th

Friday, September 5th, 2008 at 12:24am by Jake

Nintendo has confirmed that Disaster: Day of Crisis is set to be released in Japan on September 25th. This confirmation comes just days after Nintendo of Europe released their announcement for an October 24th launch in the UK region.

September 25th?! Monolith Soft spends over three years developing this title just to have it released a mere three weeks from now? Where are the trailers, and promotional adverts? Either way this gives U.S. Wii owners more to consider when predicting a western release date. There’s a very good chance NoA could slip Disaster into the upcoming lack-luster holiday line-up without worries.

Nintendo ending Disaster’s delay of crisis, releases 78 screenshots

Monday, September 1st, 2008 at 2:56pm by Derek

You’ve saved the princess. Now be ready to save the people.

Nintendo of Europe earlier today released 78 all-new screenshots of the long-delayed Wii action game Disaster: Day of Crisis. Select shots are posted after the jump, and GoNintendo has uploaded the entire set onto Flickr.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime first revealed Disaster: Day of Crisis onstage during the company’s E3 2006 press conference. The game has been delayed numerous times since, prompting speculation that the project had been canned.

Yet recent developments suggest otherwise. As reported Wednesday on Infendo, Nintendo has confirmed the project is still alive and in development. With a rumored Oct. 24 European release date and this new batch of screens, the recipe for Disaster seems just right.

Expect official word from Nintendo soon. Until then, here are some catastrophic new screens to tide you over.
