Brilliant! Next-gen games with Game Boy, NES graphics

They’re calling these de-makes, in the spirit of Mega Man 9 and, *hopefully* Castlevania. Not real, of course, but it’s yet another example of this new kind of movement, where yesterday’s gamers are resurfacing with an appetite for great games with simpler graphics.

TP is one of the only two Zelda games I’ve played (and beaten).Anyway, I’m not much of a fan of 2D games (except Mario,of course).

Hey,that’s the first time I’ve gotten first comment!

LOL!
Definitely some awesome proposed ideas there.
August 27th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
A great idea.
That will never happen.

i don’t feel like digging for a link, but there’s been a number of indie games made like this. If I’m remembering right there was even a contest a few years ago where the requirements were that the resolution and colors were limited to something smilar to the gb.

WTF?! They must be asking do die because that is the most suicidal idea. I will NOT buy any “nex-gen” game with Grandpa gen graphics. They will regret that…

Why not go all the way and bring back a new R.O.B. the Robot while they’re at it.

I want me some more top down Zelda!
August 27th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
this makes me sad.

TWILIGHT PRINCESS!!
August 27th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Um, I think some of you are confused. This isn’t real, you know.
Anyway, a GameBoy-resolution/color pallette version of Twilight Princess would be awesomesauce. I have a soft spot for that dark little screen surrounded by everyone’s favorite gray brick (as opposed to the Xbox 360’s power strip, which might be even bigger).
Very cool.

@Luigi Kid
Ditto. I never liked the 2D Metroids or the Zeldas… loved the Marios though.

@Rith
“Grandpa gen graphics”? How old are you, 2?
I actually like this. I was always impressed with how much you could do with gameboy graphic. I mean, it only has four shades of grey and everyone can see that this is Twillight Princess.

yeah but it’s retarded and looks retarded.

I want my 2D Okami!

@ smoe: I just died a little inside when I read your comment.

Makes me miss Gargoyles Quest. I really would love to play some of those games.
August 28th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
I would love more 8-bit and 16-bit style games. While I wouldn’t want it to be a total take over kind of thing. However download tittles and the occasional retail release would be cool.
I personally would love a disk with a bunch of old school type games. Like new games and old games in a compilation. That would be great.

Man I really need a qualifier here. What is every ones age and did you own an 8 bit system of any kind? I remember when gamers loved good low bit art. It just seems weird for you guys to hate these games because of the resolution and not being color and of course they are not 3d.
Then you have lots of people saying they love mario? Sounds like a lot of kids to me, simply because when ever you got a GB or what ever that’s what the parents always buy. Really there where some good 2d games out then.
Well back on topic those are some skilled artist there. Working with that color and pixel size take lots of design skills.

@ Probst
I was in ahurry to leave my house for consert and only posted half of what I was gonna say
now for the other half…
@Probst
You do have a good point, just look at Donkey Kong Country. They got in diddy and that other girl (whose name Idk XD). I do own a sega genesis with some 32x thing (i was six) and I still play sonic on occasions. Going back to the 16-bit I still think is not a good idea but that’s if they put it in thier center of focus. If they were to, if possible, pefect the 8-bit and 16-bit (i say 16 but w/e) with the color and bla bla bla, they’d come up with some fun maybe arcade style and other style games which are perfect on the go and for sitting on ur hide look up and let ur hands do all the work. Bring back the retro and give a 21st century make-over and update. The “de-make” thing sounds like a original idea too (and a funny joke lol).
…it DOES look like twilght princess…O.O

@ Rith:
Clearly you haven’t been paying attention to the hype surrounding Mega Man 9. After countless crappy card battle games the series is finally returning to what made it great. If you don’t like these ‘grandpa’ games then get over it. If it makes a company money, in this case, Capcom, then they’re going to do it regardless of what tasteless people like you have to say. And that excuse about going to a concert is just a cheap cop out. With out those ‘granpa gen’ games then you wouldn’t have gaming like it is today. Remember the NES is what bought gaming back from the verge, with it’s grandpa graphics. Plus you wouldn’t have stellar franchises like Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros, Metroid, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Dragon Quest, so on and so forth. Hell you wouldn’t have you’re pretty 3D graphics without first having 2D. Plus those games weren’t just about texturing, building 3-D models, and hiring forty man teams to do the sound track.
In those days you maybe had eight people crammed in a room all busy typing away on their keyboards and MIDI mixers creating all the assets those games had. They didn’t have things like 3DS Max, Unreal Engine, Id Tech, and all those. To really call yourself a true hard core gamer you need to be able to respect and enjoy all the classics that made gaming what it is today. I for one still love to hook up my old NES and still jam out some Metroid, and Zelda, or even the good old Duck Hunt. Which without that you wouldn’t even have your precious Halo’s and Resistances and all those games. Yeah I know it’s a very primitive game but it is an FPS in that you’re character is yourself with the gun. Plus the SNES was one of the greatest systems ever, better than the Wii and it’s plethora of shovel ware. Yeah I know I sound old school but those are games I grew up with. I didn’t come out as a gamer and was exposed to 3D games, I was lucky enough to be part of the evolution of games from the 8-bit days to these games with millions of polygons on screen. Heck the first 3D game I remember playing was Star Fox on the SNES with it’s epic SuperFX chip.
Back on topic though. I would love to see other companies take advantage of the Wii Ware and put out classicly styled games on there. I would love to see a new zelda game in the vain of A Link to the Past. The past few hand held zelda game’s have felt very short, so let’s see a great game released on the wii that could even benefit from DLC such as tacking on a new dungeon for 300-500 points. Or even a new 2D mario adventure like Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World. That too could benefit from DLC where you could download a new world every now and then for 500 points and extend the platforming good ness.
But one thing I would also like to see from Nintendo is a Virtual Console for the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. There are so many great games for those systems that it would be a smart move on Nintendo’s part, especially for those who grew up with the brick. Hell i recall several recesses back in elementary school where I would go over to the swingset, pull out the brick gameboy and start jamming out some Link’s Awakening, or Super Mario Land. Ahh the good old day’s are seeing small resurgence with Mega Man 9. I hope that enough people give the game support so that other developers will consider going back to the roots for wii ware *cough* Konami *cough*. But here are some games I’d love to see get the retro treatment on Wii Ware:
Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Mega Man X, TMNT (TMNT Turtles in Time = greatest SNES beat em up EVER!!!), Contra, Metal Gear, and even Sonic. I’m looking forward to Mega Man 9 and even intend to purchase it day one
And I do apologize if I offend anyone but it’s just kinda sad that many of today’s youth go on without knowing about the greatness that was the NES and SNES and go on saying how Halo is the best game ever when it’s clearly not the best game ever, it’s an alright game. There were many games that were and are better than many of today’s contemporary hits.
