Blast Works is too hard to review

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008 at 10:56am by David

Blast Works Wii

I understand that Blast Works is supposed to be all about building and trading ships, levels, etc online. It seems to have a very nice system in place to do that. My struggle, though, was in actually playing the game part of this title.

In the Campaign and Arcade modes, your vehicle can shoot other vehicles and it looks a lot like a side scrolling shoot ‘em up. After other vehicles are destroyed, their tumbling carcasses can be added to your vehicle if you touch them. This allows you to add their weapons firing in various directions, depending on how they’re angled when you bump into them. It’s a great idea and well executed, but the levels were just too hard for me to get through. I had to fly the first mission four times before I beat the main boss. I don’t know if my brain isn’t wired for it or what.

Overall, Blast Works seems like a four-star dream to SHMUP and level editing addicts, but for me it was too tough to get very far. I’m hesitant to give it a score, so I want to know what you think. Have you played Blast Works?  Please, share your thoughts in our comments.

I’ve yet to play it. But I’ve always blew at Tumiki FIghters, so I imagine I’d do the same at this. Kudos for saying it outright like that though, I think most reviewers would’ve just said it was too hard and given it 1 star for effort.

It sounds very interesting but I have to ask if this is a premium priced title? I’m thinking $39.99 should be the max. After my Top Spin 3 burn, I’m hesistant to do any risky spending.

The game is selling for $39.99 around here (Canada), and I’m pretty sure that’s the standard price.

Was Top Spin 3 not worth the asking price? I’m pretty sure that Blast Works is worth the price for some people… just not yet sure if I’m one of those people or not. If I can get through some of my gaming backlog before more big titles arrive, this is next on my “to purchase” list.

Yes, in the US it’s $39.99 and if you’re into the building and SHMUPing, this game is a bargain!

This game is the best thing to hit the wii to date that was not published by the N themselves. This and brawl are my wii favorites. No More Heroes didn’t hold my attention after the first level. Anyone should be able to beat the game on rookie easliy. The game gives you an extra life like every 10,000 points. By the last level if you play well you should have 99 lives. You just have to keep all of your attachments out as long as you can. I think the points system has something to do with the bullets fired. Just rack up those extra lives. Also for the most part you will be nearly invincible when you get enough junk on you. The higher difficulties will be more managable with a little practice. It’s super fun I think. Yay for Blast Works!

Though the idea of this game seems intriguing, and awhile ago I had my eyes on it, I’ve since lost interest. It just seems blah for $40 and to me now seems like another not fully fledged over priced game.

Well I watched some video of it today and decided right away that it’s not for me. I am happy that people like it but I just can’t deal with the way the game looks. It looks like a shmup for 5 year olds.

Of course it looks much better than Tumiki FIghters by a mile.

I think if the game looked like a normal classic shmup, I would be all over it.

Ive only played the first few levels and was really enjoying it before i had to go back to work. I picked it up at Blockbuster for $30 new. Its a bargain in my book.

i picked it up on the basis of this review. it’s really hard, but it’s awesome. if you play it on easy though, it’s honestly not a tough game.

the graphics aren’t bad, but they’re not special. they’re not the attraction, though. the sound is pretty good. the gameplay is the best part, it’s solid all around and the gimmick works really well.

the user generated stuff is great, the editors are comprehensive which makes them powerful and at the same time a bit difficult to use. there is some grea content out there to download already, i’ve played a few good levels and downloaded a handful of new ships. the process they set up makes trading very easy.

you can unlock a couple other games too. it’s an awesome package and anyone who likes shooters should buy it.

And now it’s only $10- TEN DOLLARS!!!- at Best Buy. Considering the included content, the editing tools, potentially endless supply of user-created content, and 4 unlockable Kenta Cho games, anybody would be a fool to skip this.
