Here’s a wild one: BioShock could be headed to the DS or the Wii sometime in the near future. It’s not definite by any means, but it makes sense to at least one person:
One of Take-Two’s big hopes for the future is the continued growth of the BioShock ‘series’, says analyst Mike Hickey of Janco Partners, who believes that fiscal 2009 could see the game land on the Wii, PS3 and possibly handhelds.
A Wii-ified BioShock version would lack the graphical punch of the Xbox360 version, obviously, but could incorporate what’s been shown in Metroid Prime 3 (and improve upon it). BioShock Wii, worth it?

I’d love to see Bioshock on the Wii, as long as they worked the hell out of the graphics chip.
interesting- the analyst is just saying ‘follow the money’ though. no more insight than that.
but i wonder, could it really do what metroid did with controls? how open with 3rd parties has nintendo been about programming. they apparently released a lot of their know-how recently, but is it enough for another company to emulate metroid?
nintendo, and all platform companies, are notoriously secretive about how best to program for their hardware.
“nintendo, and all platform companies, are notoriously secretive about how best to program for their hardware.”
Exactly my fears with this.
I think every company developing a first person shooter for Wii should be required to take a week long course presented by the folks at Retro. It should be MANDATORY for Nintendo to share this code with 3rd parties.
I would purchase Bioshock Wii in a heartbeat.
Are you guys serious? Have you not heard of Medal of Honor 2: Heroes for the Wii? IGN is already saying that it controls much better than Metroid Prime 3.
First post on this site, just to point that out.
Yeah, but I hate WWII games, and Online Multiplayer FPS games, so that game doesn’t really excite me much. I love sci-fi solo shooters like Metroid, Bioshock, Half Life.
But like I mentioned in an earlier thread, I’m stoked that the game i(MoH) s coming to Wii, if only because it helps the Wii’s portfolio.
By the time this would come out, there should definitely be a graphical improvement.
All I’m saying is that developers are ALREADY working on better FPS controls, which seems to be something you doubted.
I recently finished Prime 3, and decided to go back and replay Prime 2 (since I never finished it) and I could definitely tell the difference in visuals. Prime 3 looks noticeably better when compared to Prime 2. Especially the scenes when Samus uses a transporter toward the end of the game – that looks gorgeous.
What I’m saying is that I now feel like I have a pretty good idea of what “Gamecube 1.5″ really means in terms of visuals, and I’m okay with it. I think you could very easily pull of Bioshock, but you’d need to tread carefully and make sure the framerate is good.
Art Direction trumps Number of Polygons.
And the Art Direction is what made Bioshock the successful game that it is. So, like I said earlier, I don’t think it’d be difficult for them to make Bioshock on the Wii, as long as they didn’t pull a Far Cry and make it look like an N64 game.
art direction ftw
I don’t know, there are other technical aspects of Bioshock (other than shading and texturing) that would make it pretty difficult to port effectively to Wii… things like number of sound tracks, number of enemies on-screen at once, enemies’ artificial intelligence response, etc…. I’ve only played the demo, so I’m not sure to what extremes these elements go further into the game.
Also, what would be the point of releasing it until 2009?
Enemies onscreen at once shouldn’t be that big of a problem. Prime 3 handles 3-4 pirates at once without dropping the framerate.
I think the biggest problem Wii would have is recreating the atmosphere of Bioshock without all the fancy lighting and water effects.
Invis — the 2009 thing came about because Take Two has proposed a two-year development cycle for the BioShock series (platform agnostic). Hence, 2009.
Bioshock was a perfect storm of technical achievement, art direction, sound directions and story that made it the home run that it is. If it could have MP3 style controls (I am playing both now) it would make it that much better. It may be too little too late by the time they get it ported to the Wii and the graphical hit it takes (though only part of the formula) may hurt it.
Impossible unless Microsoft decides to let them. They bought the rights:

Bioshock on the Wii would be great with the controls, but is it feasible to port over the atmosphere and the graphical touches that make Bioshock great? The water effects alone in Bioshock is enough to make the Wii tremble and there’s tons of it. While playing Bioshock after playing Metroid, I couldn’t help but think that this would be so much better with a Wiimote. If they can tone down the graphics a bit to make it look as good as Metroid Prime 3 and play just as smooth, I’m all for it.
Water is the MOST important aspect of the Bioshock atmosphere, so it would be difficult to recreate this installment without credible water effects.
Maybe, perhaps, with a future sequel that takes place in the desert, or otherwise dry land?
Would be cool if and ONLY if the game was really different. I have beaten the the PC version twice and have searched every nook so playing again on another system is silly.
I agree. Water is essential in this game and is the underlying thing that’s trying to collapse this city. It’s done effectively everywhere you go. Water is trying to get in everywhere. It’s really an amazing technical feat.
I’m still not able to close my mouth. My amazement and hopes are high right now… Let’s see Bioshock on the Wii, Take Two!
“Worth it?” Potentially, of course it is! Bioshock isn’t a great game because of its graphics, it’s a great game because of its atmosphere and extremely solid gameplay. There are plenty of pretty games that suck. If they can find a way to keep the atmosphere intact and the gameplay mechanics stay the same, the lower quality graphics won’t make a lick of difference.
I agree that the water effects are somewhat critical to that atmosphere, but I suspect that this is doable, even if it won’t be quite as jaw-dropping.
Regardless, bringing a great game to a wider audience is always worth doing when possible, IMO.
About the water effects, even Gamecube could produce realistic water. It’ll look great on Wii, sign me up!
Unreal Engine 3 doesn’t run as is on the Wii. The engine would either need to be completely retooled or built from the ground up, essentially forcing BioShock to be totally remade.
I’d rather see the Orange Box. Half Life 2 had a decent port to the Xbox, and the Wii is, by all accounts, a superior machine.
Dixie, I thought the same about Half Life 2, but then I began to wonder if Half Life 2 on Xbox required hard disk caching. I believe I read an article on IGN ages ago that suggested this.
Yep. As far as I remember, the previous game that presented the most beautiful and great use of water was Mario Sunshine. So producing good water effects on the wii is not that hard. They would just have to rewrite the entire game, but it can be done
Being realistic, I doubt they will do it. And I rather have an entirely new game than a port of one (even being a great one as Bioshock is).
Best!
Fine. Crush my dreams, Drew. Mash them under your heel.
I wonder if there’s a way to modify that for the Wii, though. It seems like it would be easier than to have to rebuild the entire engine, as is the case with BioShock.
That said, it’s clear that Metroid Prime 3 is having an effect on people. Foremost in my mine is David Doak, who wants to bring Timesplitters 4 to the Wii, specifically because of that control mechanism.
Problem Number one- Microsoft bought the rights to the game.
Problem number 2- The Wii just can not handle those visuals. And those visuals are a BIG part of the game.
Solution- Buy an X-box 360 or buy it on PC
Maybe some for of a follow up game in the series would be cool for the Wii
Bioshock makes sense for the Wii in 2009 . Wii HD anyone?
