At Nintendo, even Miyamoto’s mistakes become games

How? Well, in a story that’s only possible due to the sheer power wielded by Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, the golfing game makes a reappearance in the Wii Sports franchise because the Great One had something of a senior moment.

Nintendo staffer Takayuki Shimamura recounts the story with a laugh: “Right after getting back to Japan, he suddenly said: “You know we’re including golf now.” Apparently he’d stated in an interview that this time round golf shots would be determined by the backswing, even though at that time a golf game didn’t exist in any shape or form!”

Basically, what happened was Miyamoto, as he is wont to do, slipped up in an interview and said golf was making a comeback in Wii Sports Resort. Nintendo developers back home, not ones to upset the great father of console video games, quickly set to work including a MotionPlus version of the original. Now that’s power, people.
