And by flushing money I mean, did Nintendo miss out on an opportunity to make even more money had they priced the Wii at $300?

Michael Pachter has an interesting take on the ridiculously high price of the 3DS.

They screwed up on the Wii. It was sold out for two full years! You just couldn’t get one,” Pachter said. “What was the point? They should have sold it for $300 at launch, and made another $50 for every Wii sold during that period. It sold so competitively in the first few weeks that it was going for $1,000 on eBay — and they absolutely don’t want to see the 3DS on eBay.

So what think ye? Is Nintendo hoping to cash in a little more on the 3DS and keep those greedy eBay entrepreneurs from stealing some of their hard earned pesos?

How much is too much for the 3DS?

$300? How about $250? Would the cost of one game make a difference? The cost of a night at the movies?

If it launches here at $300, 3DS will cost the same as a 32GB iPod Touch. But, you know what? Everyone’s seen the iPod Touch. It’s great, but no longer new. Right now, most people have not seen the 3DS in person. It can’t strut its stuff on television or the internet. Most people have never seen a 3D no-glasses-required game machine in action.

That’s why its prospects will become clearer once the general public sees 3DS doing its magic via in-store demos. If we see folks crowding around the thing, Nintendo’s got a hit.

What would make me buy a 3DS at $300? Well, to be honest, a sign saying, “In Stock.” But, what would I consider a great bargain at $300? I don’t care about the charging dock or the SD card (I’ve got SD cards coming out my ears). Here’s what I’d like at that price: (more…)

When I’m wrong, I admit it, and I’m eating crow today after seeing the Japanese launch price for the 3DS. Nearly $300, after conversion from yen to U.S. dollar? Cripes!

Now, the West rarely pays a 1:1 equivalent when it comes to how things are first priced in Japan before they come here (same for Europe with VAT, and all that), but still…I’m having trouble seeing how this 3D portable migrates much further than $250 when it hits these United States.

Seriously, the first thing I thought of when I saw the price this morning was “gee, that sounds an awful lot like something Sony would do.” Meaning, one of the big reasons why Sony’s stuff didn’t do that well this time around was high price coupled with cutting edge tech. Most people simply did not see a need, nor could they afford, what Sony was peddling—this goes for the PS3 as well as the PSP.

I sincerely hope that Nintendo has not let the insane profits of the past five years go to their head, a la Sony. The Wii is great, and the DS platform has no equal, but that doesn’t give a company—Nintendo or otherwise—license to start telling the customer what they want and what a “fair price” or “incredible value” will be. That’s Microsoft talk. Hell, the specs aside, the 3DS form factor doesn’t exactly scream “tear me off the shelf.”

Don’t do it, Nintendo. Prove me wrong.

No exact date or price announced, but the Japanese will pay a steep $300 for the Virtual Boy enabled 3DS, $50 more than what the failed PSP launched for in 2005. That change your mind?

Looks like our dreams for a Virtual Console on DS is FINALLY coming true! Virtual Console now comes to the Nintendo 3DS when the 3DS is released 2/26/2011 in Japan. It only tells that Game Boy & GBA games will be available for download, but as we all know, time may or will tell soon if a decision change is added to the service. Currently from the Nintendo Conference, Iwata or whoever was doing the keynote besides him went on to say that the US would be getting the 3DS in March 2011. The price currently set is a whopping  ¥25,000.  25,000 yen, $300 US Dollars here for us which I think is just currently a speculation price point until we hear more from Reggie and the crew from NOA. In the meantime, it’s not much, but here’s a pic. showing classic game shots from two very old Game Boy games that are near and dear to all gamers’ hearts.
