New Super Mario Bros Wii has been marketed as a return of the classic Mario console series, but it isn’t the first adventure our moustachioed plumber has experienced on Wii.  This week, we want to know:

In a recent issue of Nintendo Power Miyamoto was asked about his feelings on 3D games in the industry. He responded with this…

“I don’t think everything needs to be 3D, or that just because we’re seeing more 2D games now, that everything’s going to shift back to 2D. I think that what’s going on is that people are realizing the benefits of a 3D game, and at the same time, remembering what the benefits of 2D games were. When going to 2D, you need the courage to not be so attached to visual appearance of the games and to really pursue the gameplay experience.”

Very wise words from the father of Mario. Yet, the question still remains, do you guys prefer 2D games, or 3D games? Or does it really depend on the gameplay like Mr. Miyamoto says?

Wow! It’s already been three whole years since the day Nintendo unleashed a home console that revolutionized the game market. Where were you on that fateful day? Were you among the thousands who strolled into a store to lazily pick up your preorder without worry, or were you among the hundreds of thousands who panicked at the sight of “shipment sold out” notices?

“We’re making efforts regarding the total flow of the Zelda game. So far, the basic flow of the Zelda games is you’re exploring a field, you go to a dungeon, you conquer it and return to the field. We’re looking at altering that traditional flow. That’s all I can share, and I can’t say more until E3 next year.”

Do me a favor and watch the above trailer. Done? Good. Now don’t you wish that was coming to the platform in which it pays homage to? If that music alone doesn’t make you salivate, maybe the official game description will: “Retro chic meets modern sleek in this, the ultimate love letter to retro gamers. Seamlessly fusing new and old, the golden era of gaming is felt in every detail of this lovingly-crafted adventure. An evil demon has captured the 6 wise men and 6 orbs that protected the kingdom of Dotnia, which now stands on the verge of destruction. Freely explore the vast world, fight off monsters, and puzzle your way through many dungeons to restore peace to the kingdom.”

Although Infendo can’t officially endorse or recommend unauthorized software or hardware modifications, we keep an eye on the Nintendo homebrew scene.  What are they up to this time? Level editors, two of them, for New Super Mario Bros. Wii. That’s right, two of them: one named “Tanooki,” the other “Reggie!“  The creators of Reggie! even used a pre-release version of the program to recreate level 1-2 from Super Mario World, showing off how versatile the program is – what a blast from the past!

Curious gamers be warned – using these programs may void your warranty or lead to violation of your nation’s copywrite law.   Despite all that, seeing Super Mario World on the Wii is a thrill, and if there was ever a reason for homebrew, this is it – it unofficially adds an amazing feature to NSMB that significantly extend it’s replay value.
