Youtube Tuesday: Nintendo vs Sony vs Microsft

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009 at 11:37pm by Will

It’s been a while since this was brought up… but who do you think is winning the console war? To be honest, I’ve always believed that we’d lose no matter who wins.

Have any suggestions or videos for YouTube Tuesday?

I love this video. I like how Gates declaration is simply shot down by the words of Master Chief. “It’s just me man”.

I have to be honest with you guys. I think this war is 360 vs ps3 only. Nintendo’s Wii is in a totally different league.

While sure, financially Nintendo wins, videogame-ly it doesn’t. Wii is easily the weakest library with the lowest rated games. A lot of the top Wii games are last generation games like Okami and RE4, Wiiware(mini/short) games like World of Goo, and ancient games like Link to the Past and Mario Bros. .

I think Nintendo is in a different league now , they are like the supreme toy of the family entertainment system. Their games are short, simple, low-budget(compared stuff like MGS, GoW, Mass Effect, etc) and fun.

Nintendo is no longer head to head in the videogame business as we know it. They are not even on the same standards with their competition(motion vs no motion , HD vs NOT HD , Storage vs NO storage, Online vs pathetic online, multimedia vs no multimedia)

I think we can easily spot that Nintendo is something different now and I do not think we should frown upon that. Things change, about the only thing on par with other videogames competitors are the Nintendo IPs which are Mairo, Zelda, and Metroid. You want to convince me that they are in competition with 4-6 games?

kingmohd84 sums it up nicely I think. There’s a lack of ‘meaty’ games on the Wii now for some serious gaming…something to pull me off my PC.

However, now’s a bad time to ask – it’s the summer slump and honestly there’s nothing I’m playing on any non-portable that’s really pulling me in.

However, I am enjoying Demon Survivor on the DS. ;)

Though I don’t feel that ratings matter because most of the media is a biased piece of dung, the Wii DOES have the weakest library and it really is annoying to say. But Nintendo did that to themselves. And that’s why they’re winning the console war.

Weakest lineup? Maybe that’s a matter of perspective. Obviously reviewers don’t like Wii’s lineup, but that’s no surprise when there is blatant disdain for the console from a selection of “hardcore” gamers that figure prominently in gaming media.

Wii offers more “meaty” games than I have time to play, the best selection of casual games, and is the only console offering a truly unique gaming experience. Justify away Wii dominance however you want, but it doesn’t change the fact that PS3/360 are not even in the race this generation.

That doesn’t mean that kingmohd84 and Necro are wrong… but they are certainly in a small, vocal minority. But hey, at least you’ve got internet buddies who feel the same way!

  7. Necro says...

Skeptical, what are you considering ‘meaty’ games?

  8. kingmohd84 says...

    Skeptical…
We are not saying Wii has no games, sure Metroid, Mario, NMH, Conduit, Madworld will keep you busy. But if you look closely, those are about the only choices you have there isn’t much else considering ‘meaty’ games. And guess what, other games almost destroy them completely if you compare them to ps3/360 top games. Only Mario and Zelda can beat the ps3/360 titles maybe. From then on its just puzzles and simple games.

You know how you can tell Wii is so low on ‘meaty’ games? This is the first time since the SNES era Nintendo is releasing a second Mario Galaxy game, it is not even different it is the same just more levels basically. Mario 64-Sunshine-Galaxy are different. Galaxy1-2 are NOT different , you can notice it from the screens, and I am not talking graphics quality.

it’s funny that nerds still belive in console wars :) seriously, if all the nerds stop trying to size everybody up, theyre relize that theres plenty of games to play! a few of ya could be playing madworld right now! well because, they made that just for you and you spat right in their faces because it doesnt have any chiefs of mastery :) come on! all you gota do….. is stop complaining on the internet, and enjoy all the great games on wii that you arent playing, thats it :) please buy klonoa too, its only 30 bucks man, ooh! and the bonus level is freaking brutal! died over 30 times but it was so fun playing :)

I consider a “meaty” game to be anything that:
    (1) you’ll play for more than an hour every time you pick it up.
    (2) either takes 20+ hours to finish, or is fun enough that you will go back and actively replay the game.

So House of the Dead: Overkill counts for me (even though the game was easy to blow through once) because the game requires skill to play through harder difficulty settings, open all the unlockable content, and nab high-scoring combos consistently. Klonoa doesn’t, despite being a great platformer because it’s just not long enough.

Excluding any Nintendo-published titles, I see 21 meaty Wii games currently in my collection. Four of those games are upgraded versions of last gen games… but I didn’t play any of them last gen so that doesn’t matter to me. That’s way more meaty games than I have time to deal with, especially since there are a bunch of puzzle, casual, WiiWare, and Virtual Console games that I also want to play… not to mention games on other platforms.

You can talk all you want about how weak the Wii is, but what you really mean is “my opinion is that other systems are better”. There is nothing wrong with that opinion… but assuming that everyone else will agree with your opinion (especially on a Nintendo enthusiast website) is foolish.

Well, I’m currently enjoying playing CoD:WaW Wii online, so I really can’t complain. But, I do miss RPGs (both western hack ‘n slash, the action-RPGs and the turn-based) and even more FPS’. Currently, I have FarCry:Vengeance, Red Steel and CoD:WaW Wii and I can’t wait for The Grinder and CoD7 (Infinity Wards will never develop a Wii-title, like Epic Games). Also, more racing games other then Mario Kart Wii would be nice (Colin McRae Rally: Dirt 2 is still miles away).

Also, a lot of games this gen has disappointed me. I thought Fire Emblem: Dawn of Goddess would be as great as the Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance was. But, it didn’t captivate me to get through the Hard difficulty as FE:PoR did. I did spend +100 hours on it (includes all the time some of my characters died).

I would purchase a 360 if I felt it would be a safe investment (yeah, yeah, the failure rate has gone down, but imagine if I got several games for it and it failed, I would lose money when re-selling the games and I also don’t like sending anything to service in the likelihood it will fail again).
