Capcom: Resident Evil 5 “possible” on Wii. Infendo: “No thanks—We don’t care about boring sequels”
Friday, July 10th, 2009 at 12:46pm by Blake
Some Capcom dude has been quoted as saying that Resident Evil 5 is “possible” on Wii. Still, it “isn’t likely,” he says. Were he talking about a game of consequence, say Capcom’s excellent Resident Evil 4, I would be saddened by the statement. But he’s not talking about a game of consequence. He’s talking about a clunky controlled, out of touch Resident Evil game that takes place in the light of day (not scary). A sequel that has no soul if there ever was such a thing. No thanks. Say “hi” to Mega Man for though, m’kay, Capcom?
AUTHOR’S NOTE: And yes, I played the game for an hour and a half on release before forming the above opinion.

Uh oh, call the waambulance! Boring sequels? Spoken like someone whose never played the game because RE5 is anything but boring. Sounds more like you’re just hating on it because Capcom talked a little smack with the whole “wii can’t even handle the RE5 title screen” thing. Now that they’ve raked in the cash and are possibly looking to milk it by porting to the wii you’re climbing up on your soapbox to decry “you didn’t want us then, we don’t want you now”. I understand where you’re coming from, but your points are severely flawed.
Now if you had made the logical point being the fact that the wii community would be damaged with another horribly downgraded port with waggle controls forced into places they don’t belong I would be right with you. A graphically crippled (in comparison) downgraded port of RE5 would suck. What we need is something along the lines of RE4 made specifically for the wii.
If I want to play RE5 I’ll do it on my ps3 because I enjoy the quality of games designed specifically for the more powerful hardware. Similarly when I play wii games I also prefer the quality of games designed for the system with proper use of motion controls and polished for the hardware it’s run on.

I have to disagree RudeBoy, RE5 was pretty boring. It would have been great say, in 2004 – when clunky linear game design was in, but what we got was RE4 with upgraded graphics in a less interesting scenario. Blake’s right – it’s not a sequel of consequence – it didn’t do anything new and what it DID do was a generation old in terms of design and gameplay.
But uh… that “can’t run on Wii” title screen sure looked awesome?
July 10th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
While we are on the hypocricy topic- Blake, let me ask you something:
Why haven’t we heard a thing from you (or the staff @ Infendo) about the Conduit since you last hated on it?
As for RE5, if you’re gonna do a stupid watered down game ala Dead Rising, then I don’t want your crap. If you are going to do it, please do it right. RE5 already falls short to continue along the great standar set by RE4; I don’t think it could take much more banging if you ask me.
July 10th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
Droop4, with exception to the multiplayer, the conduit is a mediocre game not really worth the additional coverage. The previous hate was the last word.
July 10th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
I personally loved playing RE5. Played through the entire game four times with my friend, once on each difficulty, and getting every single achievement. We both had a blast. I think, as long as you play with someone, the game is a real blast. Solo, not so much.
July 10th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
I just sold back RE5 to GameStop after playing the first few levels (even played them co-op). The only thing RE about it was the title.
Capcom can keep it. Last thing we need is another developer shoe-horning some “this game is art!” schlock onto the Wii, then complaining about the Wii when the game doesn’t sell. NO thanks.
Grand Slam Tennis w/MotionPlus, anyone?
July 10th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Speak for yourself….if they put effort into it, RE5 would probalby sell very well on the Wii. As far as it being a “boring” sequel….well…you’re obviously entitled to your opinion. But I disagree. Was it as good as RE4? No….but don’t think for a second that more Wii owners than not would love for RE5 to come to the Wii (again..IF they put some effort into it).
July 10th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Does Capcom think it’s scoring points with the Enthusiast press crowd when they taunt Wii owners like this? Do they think we’ll beg them to deign to release a ridiculously late port?
Why do they keep talking about the Wii, when their support for it has been steadily and mind-bogglingly declining? Sure monster Hunter 3. How about something relevant to most Wii owners in America? How about stop insulting Wii owners by treating them like second class gamers with spinoffs, downports, and knockoffs of your own goddamn franchises?
Please to be making games for the market leader? When it reaches 60 million in October, will your reconsider? How about 80 million?
July 10th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
And for the record, RE5 really sucked. Archaic Controls, a crappy FORCED AI helper, a shitty inventory system, and probably the most racist shit in a modern game? Did Capcom forget how to make a video game?
And Ugh Achievements. Way to really immerse the player. Can’t wait to see them popup in dramatic scenes in FFXIII
“But… If I die…”
Achievement UNLOCKED: Tear-jerker
“I’ll always love”
Achievement UNLOCKED: That’s Amore

RE5 was in no way racist. It’s AFRICA! You might want to turn on the discovery channel once in a while. It may come as a shock to you, but Africans are black. How could the game be set in Africa and there NOT be a load of black people in the game.
If you’ve ever taken anthropology or psychology you’d know that your mindset is where the inherent racism really lies. People never cried shenanigans when the zombies were white nor when they were mowing down the Spanish in RE4. So it’s OK to shoot white people in the face with a maxed out shotgun, but not a black person who will eat your face just as fast as the next guy? The notion that someone should be excluded (in this case, from an antagonist role in a video game) based on skin color is racist.
July 10th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Resident Evil 5… The partner AI is a bit weak, but otherwise I don’t get a single complaint presented here. The controls are BORROWED from RE4; the “racist” argument is totally invalid. You honestly couldn’t back that up if you tried, and it doesn’t speak to the gameplay at all. If you don’t like the setting, that’s one thing, but it’s a logical continuation of the Resident Evil story – and the plot is very good at that. The inventory is a little bit of a step back, more like the original, but it’s not that much of a setback.
I’m calling it: Blake, you’re trolling.
July 10th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
Rudeboy, you must have missed the part where grass-skirt wearing spear-chucking tribal savages chucked spears and hooted and hollered. Racist stereotypes that haven’t been seen since early Hollywood.
July 10th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
I can’t believe this post. RE 5 was a great addition to the series. Would
I ever buy it on the wii? No I would not. Capcom knows
they can port over a great title and not do a good job like dead rising
and the wii owners will buy it up because of a motion controll
scheme. I have found that I only stick to first party
nintendo games since third party let’s me down to much like
sega’s latest shooter. Instead of slamming the game because you
didn’t spend time playing the whole game then give it a solid 6 hours
before making a professional statement.
July 10th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
I thought the game was a lot of fun, but the controls were 50% a pain.
I seem to recall Capcom insulting us by saying that Wii couldn’t even run the game’s intro. Now we here this? Money talks once again and Capcom hints upon pulling a Bethesda>
July 10th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
Jeff, again, if you would educate yourself you would know that many indigenous African tribes DO wear ceremonial garb (masks, “grass skirts”, jewelery, etc.) and DO “hoot and holler” in quite a few different ceremonies. The “spear chucking” reference is predominantly American racist slang that was never even hinted at in the game. Stop projecting on other people’s work.
Whether you liked it or not, the game was solidly decent. It was more like RE4.5; same game mechanics as 4 with bumped graphics. The thing is it did a lot to progress the RE plotline and for those of us who have played all of the games, that means something. It’s like Terminator 3, mediocre move, but did a good job
July 10th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
…furthering the plot.
July 10th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
I would like to get a NEW game with the same RE4 mechanics. Getting a port of RE5 would likely result in a watered down, bogus experience. The game was not designed for the Wii, and as such should not be forced to run into it.
Now, give me RE: The Darkside Chronicles using a RE4 control scheme. That would be awesome. I liked RE:UC, but I have no doubts it would have been MUCH better with a traditional RE approach (puzzles to solve) using the RE4 control scheme IMHO.
Best!!
July 10th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
“The “spear chucking” reference is predominantly American racist slang that was never even hinted at in the game.”
Ahh but the game was designed by Japanese people and engineered to appeal to Americans. At best it is grossly insensitive, and quite surprising since Japanese people were once the targets of similar things.
“Stop projecting on other people’s work.”
Please study some psychology before you start dropping the terms. And if you already are, might I suggest a different major?
July 10th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
@ rudeboy
The racist argument stems from the fact that you’re a Caucasian attacking African enemies.
July 11th, 2009 at 12:07 am
i only play on nintendo systems so i missed out on RE5. i read about the story on wikipedia because i really doubt there’s going to be a wii port. i played flop till you drop, its great game….if it was budget priced at 19.99!
if they do a wii verison, i hope they do one with an engine made for wii with its own levels, but with the same story, but that would require effort…so im probally gona get a flop till you drop downscale port
I’ll bitch and moan, but its my only option because of my loyalty.
July 11th, 2009 at 10:54 am
Thank you Blake. Your site and some people I know pretty much confirmed that the Conduit wasn’t made for me. Could you all start lobbying for Time Splitters 4 on Wii please? Thank You!
July 11th, 2009 at 11:51 am
I am having craploads (yuck) of fun with the Conduit and wouldn’t steer anyone away. By the way, remember all that “Let’s support High Voltage Software” hurrah that was going on all over this site? Not so much.
Anyways, I put my money where my mouth was and I love the game.
Back on topic, I would by Resident Evil 5 for Wii if it had the Conduit control scheme. Hey I just like killing zombies.
Oh yeah, btw, the last time I checked I was black and the game doesn’t offend me as being racist.
July 11th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
A port of this game with an upgrade of the res evil 4 engine or what ever capcom has that is new would be pretty fun and it would have to have co op. Also the conduit is great and it is the best FPS on the Wii period.
I’m finding your logic here defeating to what you are about. This is intelligent passion for all things nintendo right? Conduit is better than all FPS on the Wii except metroid single player wise. It may not have the style you like but it is a safe style and I’m glad they went with it. This style does not get in the way of a great FPS.
Rudeboy no game hurts the Wii hardcore it only hurts those who release them and fail. The Wii hardcore do not exist for bragging rights we exist to play games.
I think the solution would be to have a new res evil game on the Wii rather than a port. Or maybe make a port that has an alternate story that is maybe better.
Seriously Res evil never has been about sequels… clearly it is almost the same game except for new stuff like the sniping to help out your friend etc. Yet after the Wii port that game actually showed and proved the wii control method actually fixes control issues that the game had since it’s first game.
I don’t really see the game as racist though. I don’t see any one picking cotton or doing slave related stuff. Also the game deals with the out break with in a certain location get your mind out of the past it does not take place in 1911. This is a game and you had no problem with an american shooting other nationalities before. Yes many people of the same color in europe have enslaved and sold others from a neighboring country yet they are the same color. On top of this you do know that African actually had a hand in the enslavement of america’s black population. Seriously slavery just exposed a bigger problem with in humanity and that is exploitation which has no boundaries and can actually happen with in one’s own family.
It could be your own complex that you feel it is wrong for white people to play this or if it was a black male it would be ok? You tend to think it is ok for the same race to shoot the same races? What is it? Or maybe you are just looking for reason to not want this game?
Yet you are just coming off as some one looking for a problem and trying to be critical when truthfully there is not problem. This news posting is best described as a grudge… which is the same reason why hardcore gamer are ignoring the wii period. People do not respect others that hold grudges and you will only attract those that do.
Also you are witnessing the dynamic of the people you keep around you.
I use to like Infendo but really this is getting lame and is bring up some thing that was a big deal on kotaku when no one had any details. I have to ask you what is missing then? Is this a venting site or a place I should keep coming to for news?

Resident Evil 5 was terrible, horrible, boring, and generic. They practically stripped the Resident Evil franchise of it’s style and uniqueness and put in a shooter with the same name. The only things that make this remotely “Resident Evil” are the characters, and the survival.
Ok. In a nutshell. I HATE Resident Evil 5 with utmost intensity not because of the racism (I wouldn’t give a damn even if there was racism), not because of the controls (even though they really DO suck), not because of the bad AI of Sheba, but generally the whole idea that the franchise changed THEIR style of video games just to attract SHOOTER PLAYERS!!!!! It’s like why Gears of War 1 and 2 sucked. IT’S BECAUSE YOU ARE JUST SHOOTING IN A GENERIC SHOOTER SHOOTING BAD PEOPLE BECAUSE YOU WANT TO SHOOT A SHOOTER!!!
Retarded shooter gamers. I mean, I can admire Valve for making their games extremely unique to the crowd and adding in their own sense of style and amazing engines. I can admire Bethesda for their amazingly unique games. BUT Cod4 is SO generic and SO stupidly uncreative that I hated playing it even for an hour. Re5 gave me the same feeling as that of CoD4. It’s like the developers are stripping the franchise of what makes them different from all the others and making them just to reflect the tastes of the crowd… Talk about altruism in the gaming industry.
I just have to insult those who thought this game was remotely good and just tell them that they have ZERO sense in good games that are ACTUALLY creative, cunning and breathtaking. I commend Blake for posting this article because it show HIS sense of individuality against the retarded public eyes that read this and slam it down with what the general public thinks…
July 11th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
@Mirage1: So you are saying that because shooters suck in your opinion that I’m, and millions of others are retarded? I call bulls*** on that. First of all, just because you hate shooters, doesn’t make anyone a retard. Grant it, the gameplay for the most part is generic. Let’s look at Dead Space, that game is 100% shooter, YET, that game will scare the s*** out of you. It’s the fact that the game is either presenting a unique story or an element of gameplay you don’t expect in shooters. Besides that, have you even played Bioshock. That’s a shooter, and it’s one of the best, it had a creative environment, and a unique twist to the shooter formula in that you also had to rely on magic (plasmids). Furthermore, don’t you play certain games because of story? If you think about it, Final Fantasy is one of the most boring game franchises on earth. You mash the attack or magic button every twenty steps because of a random battle. However, it’s the story that strings you along to the end.
Anyhow, on the case of RE5, I haven’t had the chance to play it. I would like to just because of the story and how it continues on. I did play the demo, and I remember Capcom saying that the controls were going to be like Gears of War, except they weren’t at all. I just don’t like RE’s direction anymore. It used to actually scare me on occasion. However, I didn’t think RE4 was scary at all. The only thing I liked about it was that it gave a different form of gameplay to be more fastpaced. However, would I go back to the ‘tank’ controls of pre RE4 games? Yes I would. I never found a single issue with them. Plus they need to bring back the fear factor of being in an enclosed building of some sort for the duration of the game, worrying if a Crimson Head will burst through that door over there.
I also don’t see the racism in the game. Grant it, you’re a white guy shooting infected black people. However, for the safe sake of argument, I’m calling these infected folks zombies. Let’s say there was a real zombie infestation. Would you care that you’re shooting at a black zombie, white zombie, asian zombie, etc. at all? No, that black one wants a taste of you just as badly as that white one to the left. So there’s nothing racist about it. I don’t recall anyone crying racist at RE 4 or even Red Steel, where you were a white boy shooting at living asian folks that all sounded like a generic white boy.
Everytime someone cries racist about a game, I have to wonder. Are you looking at the context of the game’s situation, or are you just calling racism because you only looked skin deep? That’s the question I will leave you all with.
July 12th, 2009 at 1:02 am
@Lance: No… no, no, no, no, and no. I’m sorry if you took this the wrong way, but I meant the general public that loves and worships CoD4 like a god is retarded… because it’s a RUN & GUN!!!! I love shooters… for it’s multiplayer… but that doesn’t make me think it’s one of the best games ever made… I believed Dead Space was going an awesome direction BECAUSE it was going different from a run and gun… (I just forgot about Dead Space and went on with Valve and Bethesda as they are the most well-known for making GOOD first person shooters) The mood in Bioshock was AMAZING and really well done, I liked that, it was different and put in a shooter’s perspective more interactive than normal. I liked the direction that Mirror’s Edge because it was going for a more in-depth version of a first person shooter. BUT these great games are being overtaken by the retarded crowd of generic shooter players that play Cod4, CoD5, Halo, Gears of War, Killzone and more.
This is the wave of change I’m insulting, the wave that creates STUPID shooters like Re5. Seriously, the only thing the game has for it is its graphics, nothing else. Story SUCKED SAGGY BALLSACK and the AI for Sheba was $#@% and their were no puzzles, controls sucked, and it WAS NOT EVEN REMOTELY scary… I say this is probably because the developers tried to create a game that would appeal to the main crowd and not really for the fans of the franchise… Bad idea. The game lost its own unique mood and feel from the Resident evil franchise as they made it for SHOOTER lovers first and fans of Resident Evil second.
I mean, I agree with you Lance, wholeheartedly. Because I’m not insulting the people that like shooters. I’m insulting the main crowd that worships stupid games that consist of GOOD GRAPHICS, SHOOTING BAD GUYS, BLOODY GORE, and nothing else. What I find most engaging in a video game is it’s story, especially if it’s single player. RE5 concentrated too much on co-op (Still not that fun). So it turned into Gears of War 3 and not Resident Evil 5, you know what I mean now?
July 13th, 2009 at 11:46 am
i went over to my brother in-law’s to play this on his ps3 to see what all the fuss was about and i’m sorry to say i was deeply disappointed by the game. the opening sequence was the best part about it. i have re4 on the wii and loved it. i missed it on the cube the first time around and really wasn’t a fan of the series before this installation. i must have been spoiled because part five was boring. i’m not saying it sucked the worst of all time, but it was no part 4 and definitely not what i would have thought to follow it’s predecessor. so all in all if we never get a waterdown-port then that’s fine by me.
July 13th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
For what it’s worth, I loved Resident Evil 5. Sure, it was just a less inventive version of Resident Evil 4 with a few injections of steroids and even less fright, but it was still a fun romp. I played the hell out of that game.
Would I buy it on Wii? Wouldn’t even consider it. But it was a good PS3 game.
