How and when did you get your Wii?
Saturday, June 20th, 2009 at 6:15am by Blake
I got mine in 2006, nine days after the system was released. Due to a family engagement, I was unable to buy the system the night of launch. But it probably worked out to my advantage, because I understand a lot of people were turned away that night, even after waiting several hours in line to get one.
Anyways, my buddy Mark (hat tip again, chief) happened to walk into GameStop immediately after a shipment of four arrived. The store only allowed one per customer, so he called a buddy who lived close by to serve as my buying proxy. Afterwords, he called me up, we made the exchange, and the rest is history.
How about you?

I picked mine up on launch day at Zellers. I reserved it two weeks before in a bundle with two other games.
June 20th, 2009 at 7:09 am
I got mine this past March (2009) for my birthday. I have an XBOX 360 already and wanted to add to my consoles by getting a wii. I must say, each one has its pros and cons.
I enjoy the mario games, and have a couple others that I like a lot (Excitebots, and Tiger Woods 10 with Wii Motion Plus).
I’m looking forward to the Mario for the Wii coming out later this year, and also Wii Sports Resort.
June 20th, 2009 at 7:28 am
put more time into your Wii. I got mine towards the end of 07. It is an amazing system, there is no denying that.
June 20th, 2009 at 8:15 am
I reserved mine like… a year or something in advance and got it launch night. It’s been one of my most played systems ever, so it was well worth it.
June 20th, 2009 at 8:34 am
I got mine through an eBay-type site down here in Brazil in April of ‘07. Paid more than the regular US price, but it was MUCH cheaper than what it was going for in Brazilian stores.
June 20th, 2009 at 9:22 am
I bought an Xbox 360 at launch. The Wii didn’t appeal to me mainly because it didn’t do HD. I played WiiSports a few times at a friends house and thought it was pretty cool, but wasn’t worth buying a Wii for.
I remember going to IGN.com one day and hearing Mario Kart was coming to the Wii. I looked and saw the release date was 2 days from then. I ended up going to EBGames the following day during a delivery and picking up a Wii (they were still rare at the time). This generation I’d have to say I’m having more fun with the Wii than my Xbox 360. I’ll probably go exclusively Nintendo next generation unless Rare decides to make a true Banjo Kazooie game.
June 20th, 2009 at 9:46 am
I got my wii on March 23, 2007. I was trying to get it all the time before this, but never could. We had to go to target at 7 am.
What’s sad is that we were the only kids in line.
June 20th, 2009 at 9:47 am
Waiting in line at a Walmart on launch day for 14 hours until midnight. I still remember the smell because they put the line by the scented candle aisle.
June 20th, 2009 at 10:02 am
Christmas 2006 I think, a few days after launch in Europe. (It was release 17 December I believe).
In Belgium there never has been a shortage, so not really hard to get by one. Ever since then, the system got expanded by 3 remotes, 3 nun-chucks and 2 classic controllers and lots of games. Not to forget we already had a GC with 4 controllers.
Aaah, it’s fun living with 3 brothers ^^;
June 20th, 2009 at 10:12 am
Bought mine in April of 2007. Went to Target late one Saturday based on tips from the forums that they quietly had put out Wiis. They had exactly one left so I asked my wife to go get a salesperson while I guarded the unit.
Shortly after a middle aged woman came to the aisle and I prepared myself to defend the unit. I had remembered hearing about a basketball game where one guy got down on all fours and started barking to distract the other team and so, yes, this is what I was about to do if she approached. Fortunately, she gave me a weird look and traversed over to the next ailse.
When the saleslady arrived she asked if we wanted any other games so we got Wii Play (I got Twilight Princess later in the year). She then took us to the cash register where she had us juggle batteries to get our Wii. I’ve never tried so hard to juggle in my life.
Trying to hide the unit from my brother-in-law, we set the unit up late that night and had a blast!
June 20th, 2009 at 10:50 am
Got mine just a few days after Christmas in 2006. I called up Best Buy on a whim and they had some so I rushed out of work and got there as quick as I could. Rest is history as they say. I had to send my Wii in once for repair in 2007 because the drive was really noisy. been perfect since.
June 20th, 2009 at 10:51 am
I have a launch Wii. It was freezing cold.
June 20th, 2009 at 10:53 am
11:55 p.m. November 18 with about 20 other people at a Gamestop. No waiting.
After I picked it up I drove by the local Toys R Us with it out my window at the incredible line that had formed out front of the store.
June 20th, 2009 at 11:00 am
I went to gamestop when it opened the day the preorder started. They sold all of their systems before getting through the line so i couldn’t get one there. They told us to not even try the EB games down the road because they already had a bigger line than they had systems. We thought we’d try it anyway. We got over there, and there must have been multiple people in line for each system because we ended up getting the second to last system. So on launch day, i got my system from EB and my copy of Twilight Princess from Gamestop, where i had it on preorder.
June 20th, 2009 at 11:43 am
I got it on launch day at the Nintendo World Store after having reserved it. It was pretty nice, everyone was waiting outside in the cold in this line that circled the entire block and I (because of my reservation) skipped the whole thing and went right inside.
June 20th, 2009 at 11:43 am
Christmas 2008.
June 20th, 2009 at 11:50 am
I got mine in Feb. 2007. At first we weren’t sure, but after a couple of months of seeing it, we decided it was time. So I spent one whole morning calling every single store in the area. It also happened that I wanted to get a DS at the same time (someone has given us some money to buy one for my son). So not only was I asking about the Wii, but every place I called I asked about the DS as well (it too was hard to get at that time).
Finally I was able to get a lead about a DS at Target (no Wii’s anywhere though).
So I rushed over to Target to get the DS. While I was there, I was looking at all the Wii software that was available behind the glass. At first I didn’t notice the Nintendo rep who was also there rearranging all the Nintendo products. When I finally did notice her, I started talking to her about how popular both the Wii and the DS were. She was a really nice, talkative lady. After a few minutes, she finally said, “Are you looking for a Wii as well?” I told her that I was, and she said that she was pretty sure that there was a new shipment of Wii’s that had come in about an hour ago, but they hadn’t been put into the store’s inventory yet, and would I like one. I had to think about it first, but after a light second, I said “Yes, that would be rather nice” (or at least something like that). So she called over one of the Target employees and told him to please have his manager put the Wii’s in the system, while she went to the back to get me one. When she came back, not only did she have the Wii, but she also handed me a nice set of Nintendo pins for my son.
Needless to say, I was more than just a bit pleased with Nintendo’s customer service on that day.
June 20th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
xmas 2006
June 20th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
My brother and I waited outside in the cold at Wal-Mart on launch night with absolutely nothing to do. I’m not sure I will do anything like that again, but as least we got one.
June 20th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
April 13, 2007, or Friday the 13th was a REALLY lucky day for me when I was in school and someone gave me a free Wii
June 20th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
I was determined to get on on launch day without waiting all weekend for it. The night before I drove around town to look at all of the lines forming and plan my strategy. Every place was packed so I went by Sam’s Club and saw there were 2 people waiting, a father and son. The father was an employee and he knew they would have 5 Wiis available. I left them and went home to sleep. In the morning I went back and there were about 8 people standing outside so I thought my chances were over. I drove back buy to ask if there were any available spots, and to my surprise there was one left. The others were just friends waiting with their buddys. I pulled over and hopped in line. The 1st guy in line waited 24 hrs, the 5th guy( me) waited 1 hr.
June 20th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Spent the night outside Toys R Us to get the pre-order. Tried to get the pre-order on the PS3 just to flip it and pay for the Wii, but got there too late. Good thing too, cause the only people who bought launch PS3’s were just putting em on ebay, the market was flooded, and nobody was making a profit.
June 20th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
at the day of launch in Europe, 8 december 2006 or close to it, I took the day off and it was delivered to my home.
still happy with it !
June 20th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Got mine on christmas evening 2006. I love the little thing, but I haven’t playing it much lately. Maybe I should give Okami and Wind Waker a spin soon
June 20th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
I got mine in April 07, where I lived you still never saw them on shelves. I got mine by getting the manager at gamestop to tell me when there shipment would be arriving and I was right there when the UPS man arrived.
June 20th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
Midnight launch at Gamestop. Had it by about 12:30 and immediately went home and spent the rest of the day playing Zelda, Wii Sports, and Rayman Raving Rabbids. That was a great day.
June 20th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Here in Mexico Wii consoles could not be had at launch since not many made it to retail. I paid for mine at launch but received some weeks later in January because that’s the earliest the store could have them in stock.
Zelda, Red Steel and Rayman Raving Rabbids. Ever since I’ve enjoyed the console and I’m looking forward to all the great releases for the year.
June 20th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
got it on launch day had to wait sit in meijer all day long and it was during the OSU vs michigan game to but luckily they had a tv playing the game haha
June 20th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Got mine at Wal-mart on launch night. Sat in line for 5 hours reading a book while the people around me played Mario Kart on their DSs.
Was a nice surprise whem my wife showed up with my 1 year-old daughter to keep me company.
I grabbed Zelda as my first game.
June 20th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
I, like keith, reserved mine at Zellers. Only problem was it was at a zellers in a different city and I wasn’t in that city when the Wii launched so I figured I had to wait a week or two. Then a few days later I woke up out of bed and a Wii was looking me in the eye. I almost fainted. My dad went out and bought one and was gonna sell the one from zellers. Sure I only had one game for a while (the Zellers pre-order had my games) but it was a blast playing Wii Sports.
June 20th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
@Eden
I know what you mean, I was in Mexico in 07 and didn’t see any wii products ANYWHERE.
June 20th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Waited outside a Wal-mart in mississippi for 12 hours. Interesting experience, some guy behind me got really drunk and threw up all over himself, then some random guy came up in a suspicious black car and tried to sell us black market PS3’s, then this really annoying kid who was first in line dropped his wii showing it off to us as he drove by in his parents car. Was a very strange night
June 20th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Launch day along with my cousin and other 80 lucky gamers.
I got Zelda and he got COD3.
Had a blast.
June 20th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
I got it at launch, at game, if you wanted a wii you had to preorder it, so i went to pick it up at about 7am, it it with twilight princess, red steel and wii play (with the free wiimote)
it was actually pretty light when i went there, the guys in the store were saying how they were expecting it to be busier, I guess because we had to pre-order them, there was no point hurrying in, could easily wait till after work or college to go pick it up
June 20th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
Mine was in 2008, it was a wedding present from my brother.
For me, it was the best wedding gift ever! For my wife, not so much…
June 20th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
I got mine on the second December launch after the first release was a bomb for me. My mom left without me for Toys R Us. Hmmph, teach me not to watch The Tonight Show all the way through before an important release date…
June 20th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
I got my Wii on Nov. 25, the first saturday after its release. I wasn’t looking for a Wii that day but i decided to walk into the local EB Games (GameStop) and I got my hands on the last Wii in stock! My friend wanted to kill me that day cuz it took him til March ‘07 to get his and had one walk out on him on one occasion while hunting down one for himself.
June 20th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Picked mine up at the end of January 07 after weeks of searching and calling. A year later, it got stolen. I had to buy another one, which I got by June or July 08.
June 20th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Launch night at Target in Saugus MA. I used the website with the Target inventory to decide which one gave me the best chance, so I wouldn’t have to stay out all night. I got up at like 4am to go and wait. It was pretty cold. Too bad Red Steel was such a let down. At least I had Zelda and Wii Sports to make up for it.
June 20th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
I got mine December ‘07 on eBay for only about $50 or $60 more than the regular cost. It was so exciting, we got it on the VERY LAST SECOND. I about died afterwards.
June 20th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
I got mine on launch day. I waited outside Target for 16 hours in the freezing cold the night before. But all of us waiting were there for the same thing, so we had this sense of camaraderie and we had a lot of fun. Plus, my aunt worked at the Target, so I got her employee discount, so bonus.
June 20th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
I got mine on launch day. I waited outside Target for 16 hours in the freezing cold the night before. Third in a line that grew to over 70 by opening time. Picked up Zelda, Red Steel, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance so that I would get a $20 Wii console gift card. I also managed to pick up three extra Wii Remotes and one extra Nunchuck. My brother picked up a second Wii which we later sold off for a $150 profit.
June 20th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
Skipped half a day of school (was in my senior year of high school then) to pre-order the system, then just walked into the store on launch night (midnight, so technically “morning”) and picked it up. It was wonderful. ;D
I remember excitedly playing Wii Sports for the first time before popping in Zelda, and when I did play Zelda, I didn’t stop until 4 AM. I think the system launched at the beginning of my Thanksgiving break, so I had a few days off of school just to enjoy it. It was wonderful. ;D
June 20th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Oh yeah, same as DonWii, to make sure I got mine, I preordered from a few places (it was free!) I ordered one from game which I kept, one from comet, which I sold to my friends dad (who then gave it to my friend for christmas – He decided to give me £40 extra aswell, without me asking!)
and then one from amazon.co.uk which I sold on ebay and made about £100 profit, So, I pretty much got my Wii for free lol
June 20th, 2009 at 8:04 pm
Got it on Launch night at Bestbuy. Standing in freezing cold at 5 A.M. We talked to some people around us and lucky Krispy Kreme was right next door
. The people also brought extra coffees and breakfast sandwiches for people. Easily got ours as the 67th customer! KRISPY KREME WHY DID U GO OUT OF BUSINESS?!
June 20th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
One came with an 30 inch TV and one was found at a walmart in the middle of the night.
June 20th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
midnight release, second on line.
I remember I had to wait hours in line at GameStop with my friends just to preorder the thing, and then again in hours to buy it. Great day.
June 20th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
Was number 13 in line of over 200 at bestbuy on launch day. Waited 10 hours in the cold and snow (Massachussetts) from 10pm till 8am. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat
June 20th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
Went by Toys’R'Us and Target around 7pm the night before launch. Lines of dozens of people at both. I went home, sniped the first auction I found for an in-hand Wii with a photo of a receipt and a feedback rating of over 100, and three days later I was fake-bowling.
Two weeks later I did the same thing to get one for my nieces, but had to pay about a hundred bucks more. Still worth it.
June 20th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
I waited in line for 5 hours, waking up at 4:30 in the morning to reserve a Wii at Toys R Us. Got it day one, and have been playing it basically every day since then.
June 21st, 2009 at 12:06 am
I’d been looking for one for months, but never found on in the area. Anytime I went to Target or Wal-Mart, I checked their inventory in the hopes one would be there.
Finally, one night, I said to my wife just as we were going to Wal-Mart, “I’m done looking. I’ll just wait until they are readily available and pick one up then.” When we got to Wal-Mart I then said to myself, “If I don’t check I’m gonna hate myself.” Sure enough, they had five in stock. Grabbed one immediately, ran home, hooked it up and bowled until 2:00am.
June 21st, 2009 at 12:18 am
Picked up Zelda: TP, and Red Steel launch day, and happened to get the last Wii on the Monday after launch at T-R-Us.
Didn’t wait in no lines but the Best Buy I stopped at first was sold out.
June 21st, 2009 at 2:16 am
I got mine launch day at midnight, and I was second in line after an NOA (Seattle) employee and first one out of the store.
June 21st, 2009 at 2:27 am
Got mine on feb 2007, i’m from chile and videogames are pretty damn expensive.. wii launch price was about 260.000 CLP (480 USD) so i got a good deal with an online store and got it for 280.000 CLP (550 USD) with 2 wiimotes and 2 nunchucks, a good deal by the chilean price standars
then modded it asap bc games are really expensive too
June 21st, 2009 at 4:32 am
A year after it came out. I was waiting for a decent franchise to come out (I had already ordered Twilight Princess for gamecube when Wii came out). So I bought it when Metroid Prime 3 was released
June 21st, 2009 at 5:01 am
12th in line at target. waited 10 hours with my brother and a friend because they wanted ones too to sell on ebay (which they did)
June 21st, 2009 at 11:20 am
How about how I ALMOST got a Wii… I was @ Toys R Us on Christmas Eve 2006. The person that was 2 spots in front of me got the last Wii. Needless to say I wasnt too thrilled about that.
June 21st, 2009 at 3:00 pm
I think of myself as the luckiest wii owner ever! A friend of mine sold his too me in August of 2007 for $150 because he didn’t think any decent games would be coming out on the system. I got the system, a nifty carry case, both controllers with chucks, zelda, wario ware, and wii play. I kind of feel bad sometimes… but not often
June 21st, 2009 at 8:24 pm
I got mine Dec. 25, 2006, after waiting sooooooooooooooooo long.
June 21st, 2009 at 9:42 pm
Was preorder number 33 at Gamestation and they got 30 Wii’s in on launch. Was gutted, tried loads of other places but no-one had one.
Got a phonecall the following friday whilst I was in Uni saying they had mine in stock and was then torn between finishing my work so I could go to get it and being too excited to actually work.
Went to my nans (cause it was closer to Uni than home) and hijacked her TV for a few hours. I remember playin Wii Tennis for the first time and as the ball came to me I pressed A to swing the racket. Remember thinking, oh yeah, I don’t have to do that anymore. Loved it ever since and I’ve ordered Virtua Tennis and Motion Plus today and cannot wait for The Conduit on friday.
June 21st, 2009 at 10:30 pm
It’s kind of exciting reading all these stories.
My then-fiancé called in sick to the Target we both worked at and secretly stood in line at Wal Mart all night to buy it. She surprised me with it the next day (Dec 06 I believe.) Early titles I still play include Zelda, Tony Hawk Downhill Jam, Sports, and Rayman.
June 22nd, 2009 at 12:07 am
I got mine on launch at midnight with Twilight Princess at Gamestop.
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:01 am
My son owns a GameCube. Fun little toy. Bought it himself. Impressive really for an eight year old (at the time) with no income except birthday and Christmas. None of his games interested me except Pikmin. Addictive little game that.
I owned a Colecovision and my wife has her brother’s NES. I always liked Q-bert. She loved Tetris. Super Mario Brothers was the favourite for the kids. Whenever I played it I was always leaning to the right urging Mario on faster and further and higher. My wife was the same with Tetris; always leaning in the direction she wanted the pieces to fall. Just ahead of our time I guess…
I was walking through the Rideau Centre (shopping mall) on the way to the food court when I detoured into EB Games (Electronic Boutique) as I have twice a week for the last two months. Difference was this time when I asked if they had any Wii consoles available I was told they had two.
Quickly got in line behind three others. Lady at the cash didn’t appear to be buying a console. Good for me. Two people in front of me and two machines left. The store has been open for an hour already today and they still have two machines! Usually they are sold to the people in line before the doors even open. Two months after the Wii was released and it is now taking an hour before stores sell-out. Demand is slowing down.
Boy first in line can’t be over 16. Where does he get the money to buy a Wii. Granted $279 CAD for the Wii is much cheaper than paying $699 for the PS3 but McDonald’s can’t be paying that much can they? Mental note: tell 15 year old daughter to get a job… again.
Lady behind him and in front of me appears to be a bag lady. Typical for this area. The downtown attracts all kinds. What could she want with a Wii? Her shopping cart is probably double parked out front.
Will anyone notice if I knock her out of the line and guarantee my console? Wait no need. Counter lady is leaving and boy is exiting with her.
SCORE!!!
Turns out the bag lady wanted a bag. Go figure, she doesn’t have enough I guess.
Store-kid goes to the back vault to get my machine. Two 16 year old punks see my machine coming out and ask if there are any more. Where do they get the money to buy a Wii? Oh yeah…
One only they are told. Before they can jump him and I pile on and start an all out hockey brawl store-kid quickly adds, ‘in addition to this one’. Saves his life he did. 40-something yuppie comes in and asks for a Wii as well. Slam. So sorry. Too bad for you.
How am I paying? Can I buy a flippin game with it??? Comes with Wii Sports, I know, but can I buy the Wario Ware: Smooth Moves? Gotta hassle shop-kid to sell me stuff. Shouldn’t he be working at McDonalds? Oh yeah, they pay too much.
Can’t wait to get home and set this baby up.
Can’t stop smiling as I leave the shop.
Can’t believe I finally got one. Wasn’t planning on buying it at all, actually. Never thought they would have one in stock. Who figured he would say yes?
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:54 am
2 days prior to Launch Day we got kicked out of wal mart *shudder*, but we camped the store anyway. The next batch of folks to show came in around 10pm the night before (26 hours before). It was in the low 30’s outside and we massed together and approached management about having a place to gather and they put us OUTSIDE in the garden section. We did shifts for food and bathroom breaks, and generally froze our asses off.
Now you read this and say to yourself “2 DAYS? WTFOMGFOREELZ” I couldn’t break my streak! I have been 1st in town for EVERY Nintendo system since the Super Nintendo, I wasn’t about to be outdone.
Needless to say, I got my Wii +3 Wiimotes +3 Chucks, +$20 points card and Twilight Princess that night. Sleep? What’s that?!
June 22nd, 2009 at 12:23 pm
I got my Wii back in 2006 when it launched. It was my frist system that I got on launch day and also the first one that I had to camp out for to get (that includes the reservation as well). I got mine at Toys R Us.
Got the system with Red Steel (bought it cause of the hype), Excite Truck, and Twilight Princess. I traded in my GC for the Wii since the Wii played all of my GC games flawlessly.
June 22nd, 2009 at 1:50 pm
When they announced the launch date, I was nervous, my wife’s family had a family reunion planned that week and I knew I was going to be out of town. I asked a good friend if he would try to get us both one since I would be gone. He agreed but knowing how cold it was in Iowa, I wasn’t sure he would be able to drag his ass out of bed early enough. Well, I was even further north in Minneapolis MN. We were staying at a hotel and going to a football game. Before the game we went to a shopping center near the hotel and I saw a Target. I made a mental note of it thinking I might swing by there later. I did, I drove by late that night after the rest of the fam was in bed and I saw a line of about 20 people. We asked the people out int he cold if they knew how many Wiis they had and they said 60, so I figured we had a good shot without freezing all night. I also found a Best Buy that had a huge line but no one knew how many they had. It was midnight and the temperature was well below freezing. I told my wife what I was thinking about doing and she was thrilled, thought the idea sounded fun. So we set a wakup call for 4am at the hotel and went to sleep. When we got up, we rushed over to the target and got in line. We were numbers 37 and 38. We sat next to a TOTAL NERD wearing a Nintendo hoodie, a metroid hat and a laynard from E3 that said Metroid Prime on it. He was playing DS with cutoff finger gloves the whole time. It….was…..awesome! I froze my ass off for another 3 hours till 8 am when target came out and passed out tickets. We all went inside, nice and orderly and got our Wiis. I picked up Twilight Princess, Excite Truck, CoD3 and Red Steel. I enjoyed them all. It was a fantastic experience I’ll never forget. I’ve never done a console launch before and may never again, but I’m glad I did this once.
June 22nd, 2009 at 4:19 pm

This is a great thread topic. I enjoy reading your stories about getting the Wii. I got mine in June 2008.
The story is: About a week before father’s day, I was out of town. My wife wanted to get me a Wii (for a surpise present) and didn’t realize how hard it was to still get a Wii in our city. It was a Saturday afternoon, so she started calling stores to find one. The manager at ToysRUs said that he was getting a shipment of 18 Wiis and putting them out Sunday morning when the store opened. He said she had to get there before the store opened to have a chance to get it. She was skeptical, but she goes on Sunday morning and she was the 11th in line to get one of the Wiis and it worked. Thanks honey!

I was in Japan at the time. I preordered from Walmart.com with the 8 games for $650 but they were out of stock in about 4 of the games so they reimbursed my card $200. The only bad thing was that it took over month & a half to get it shipped to me (APO address!) I was even tracking it online. I had it preordered way before the release and it shipped by the 26th of November. (Does anyone know why they send something from Tennessee to the West Coast only to be shipped back to Ohio, enroute to southern California?) I ended up getting it 27 December 2006.
